In West Dennis on September 14 James F. Whittemore aged 19 of South Dennis, driver of a bakery wagon, was found shot in the road. His money vanished and his horse and wagon were located some distance away. Believed killed by burglars active in the Cape Cod district all summer, with two officers shot previously. About a thousand men and boys searched the woods for the assailants. Whittemore was shot twice, in the forehead and back of the head.
Washington reports clearance papers have been granted to the transport Tartar at Hong Kong, allowing immediate departure. Col. Metcalf notes the ship carried no more troops than other transports, and the move follows a British suggestion to avoid interfering with American transports.
Manila reports Col. Denby and Prof. Worcester, members of the Philippine commission, have been instructed by President McKinley to return at once. They plan to sail for Hong Kong on September 26. It is unclear if the clerical staff will accompany them. The commissioners recently moved to a new office and were to work on establishing a municipal government for months.
Orange Free State burghers notified to be ready for extraordinary session at a moment's notice. They have passed a resolution to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Transvaal in case of hostilities.
Chicago on September 14 reports Martin Julian manager of Bob Fitzsimmons saying there is no doubt he will return to the ring. Julian has secured signatures for a match between Fitzsimmons and the winner of the Jeffries Sharkey fight on October 23.

The Concord Antiquarian society observed the town’s 264th anniversary with a quiet reception and tea at their Lexington street rooms for residents. In the evening the annual meeting elected officers: Hon. John S. Keyes as president. Samuel Hoar and Rev. Loren B. MacDonald as vice presidents. George Tolman, secretary. Thomas Todd, treasurer. and Charles H. Walcott and Edward W. Emerson as executive committee members.
The Union Veteran Legion of the United States began its 14th annual national encampment in Baltimore with welcome addresses by U S Senator Wellington for the governor and Col Theo Lang for the mayor.
