report from Buffalo shows President McKinley near death after a severe sinking spell. doctors rushed at 2.40 am followed by digitalis and other stimulants. by 3.25 am the president remained gravely weak, with officials awaiting further word as Mrs McKinley had not yet been told.
Milburn House Buffalo September 13 2 50 a m the President is in very serious condition with grave apprehension. His bowels moved well but his heart does not respond to stimulation. he is conscious with warm skin and a small regular easily compressible pulse. Respirations 30 temperature 100 signed Pp M Rixby M D Mann Roswell Park Herman Mynter Eugene Waldin Charles B Stockton George B Cortelyou Secretary to the President.
In Buffalo on September 13 Mrs. Mc Williams drove to the Milburn house at 3:25 PM. Alighting, she stated she was told the President was much worse and asked to come to the house at once.
At 3.35 in Buffalo Milburn House Secretaries Wilson and Hitchcock Abner McKinley Dr Baer and Cortelyou gathered in the drawing room. They had not yet been summoned to the sick room and their anxious expressions showed grave concern.
At Milburn House Buffalo on September 13 Secretary Cortelyou says the President is not in extreme danger yet the seriousness is tied to heart weakness and potential for decline. Officials acknowledge alarm over health while seeking stable guidance.

George P Sawyer, a Milburn friend, emerged from the Milburn House with relief after reports said the President was dead earlier. He noted the flag at Exchange and Main streets was half-masted but said the President is now better than three hours ago and surgeons are dressing his wounds.
