Columbus Ohio Sept 18 The executive committee of the United Mine Workers issued a circular urging miners to accept the operators terms based on Saturday’s resolution.
Massachusetts boy William Smith, 12, drowned when a hawser fouled a small boat his uncle steered near the Tiverton drawbridge over Fall River. The current capsized the craft. the man survived. Also, James E. Baker, 56, of Dorchester, fell 15 feet from a broken house staging at No 5 Ware Street Boston and died later at city hospital.
Theodore Lyman died Thursday evening at about seven at his Nahant summer home from creeping paralysis. He was about 64, survived by his wife and two sons, one abroad. A member of a famed New England lineage, he served as lieutenant colonel on Gen Meade's staff and later as Massachusetts inland fisheries commissioner before election to Congress in 1882. He lived much of his later years in Brookline as an invalid, and his wife was a daughter of Agassiz.
In police court this morning Newell E Brown, accused of larceny from Hamilton by knock-out powder in beer, held in 600 for the Superior court. Dennis Carns fined 5 for drunkenness. John Means and Annie Daly held in 500 each for adultery. Frank Butcher and Lewis Shero fined 4 each for trespass. Thomas N Fox case continued to Sept 18 for assault. Oswald Lapierre held in 200 for embezzlement of jewelry from R D Gordon, for further hearing on Sept 18.
Inspectors Allen and Laflamme spoke with Medical Examiner Irish about the death of Katie McHugh whose body was found in the Hamilton canal early Sunday. The death certificate has not been signed yet and a full inquiry will follow.
After busy weeks the assessors publish a list of taxpayers owing $500 or more. Frederick Ayer tops individuals with $7,525 and J C Ayer estate at $10,885. Merrimack Manufacturing leads corporations with $48,708. Numerous individuals and estates across wards show substantial assessments including Cahill firms, Coturns, and multiple estates and companies, with totals ranging widely.
A lengthy ledger lists numerous mills, banks, and companies with sums, totaling 44 274. Key names include Appleton, Lowell Machine Shop, Merrimack Manufacturing, Tremont & Suffolk Mills, and Nashua & Lowell R R. Also noted are National Banks and various regional firms like Bon Marche Dry Goods and Howe Lumber Co.
Daniel Marshall died at his home in North Pelham on Saturday morning after a brief illness. He celebrated the 50th anniversary of his marriage to Hannah J. Campbell. He was the son of the late Isaac Marshall, born in Pelham, Navy. He leaves three sons Isaac Co. of Pelham, William C. and Moses R. of Laconia, and a daughter Mrs. Louise Bell of Lowell. He was a prosperous farmer and a Congregational church member, beloved by many.
Bernard Gara aged 67 died at his home on Bartlett street after settling in Lowell in 1851. A native of Ireland he served three years in the Civil War and leaves daughters Elizabeth Gara a teacher at Varnum and Agnes Gara. William F Bowen 19 died at Lowell hospital after residing at 114 Hildreth street with service in local clerical work.
The drowned man is identified as Charles Hallas of Coburn Street. He lived with his daughter Mary at 209 Adams Street and suffered rheumatism. Authorities believe he was overcome while bathing and drowned. Funeral held at Edson Cemetery on Saturday afternoon.
Registrars held a Saturday session required by law and added 14 names to the voter lists. Two were from Wards One and Nine, one from Ward Three, one from Ward Four, one from Ward Five, one from Ward Six, three from Ward Seven, and three from Ward Eight.

The fall term of the Superior Civil Court opened at Lowell with Judge Charles Lilley presiding Rev L C Manchester of St Johns Episcopal Church led the court in prayer. Jurors were sworn. 3 excused. First case Morton v Bradbury-Stone Storage Battery Co seeks 3000 in salary dispute.
The Lowell Homing club held its fourth young bird race on Sept 11 from Lebanon New Hampshire, 85 miles. C M Hoffman released the birds at 11 40 am as pigeons faced cloudy start and a headwind. Eight birds reached Lowell at 2 48 pm but failed to earn diplomas. others followed later. Next race from Randolph Vermont.
Fall term opens with large attendance and busy staff. About 797 pupils at the high school, 430 girls and 367 boys, with 283 new entrants including 163 girls and 120 boys. Bartlett, Green, Pawtucketville, Carter, Butler, Lyon, Highland and Varnum schools show crowded rooms and expanding needs. Principal Harris returns from Europe to find Varnum needs expansion and potential reassignments. several substitutes cover absences.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the Immaculate Conception church for Mrs. John A. McQuade with Rev Fr Joyce officiating. Bearers included Bernard Gateley Andrew McQuade James McQuade and Thomas Hoban among others. Burial followed at the Catholic cemetery with O'Donnell funeral home in charge. The service featured floral tributes from numerous family members. A second funeral for David G C Robertson occurred Saturday at No 4 Lowell corporation with Rev Dr Chambre officiating and Odd Fellows involved. Bearers were Morse Dodge Morrison Lowell Reid and West Medford representatives.
