Annie Dolan a demented domestic leaped toward the Concord river bridge in East Merrimack street around 7 am. Her brother-in-law, following to protect her, intervened and caught her as she reached the rail. Police took her to the city farm. she resided with relatives on Lakeview avenue.
Twenty four drunks appeared in Hadley police court this morning. Twelve were fined five dollars each, five paid one dollar, and the rest were sentenced to jail or workhouse. The docket included Patrick Ledwick jailed three months for larceny of garden rakes, William Taylor jailed pending further hearing for larceny and embezzlement, William Earle jailed one year for larceny from the person, T H Dever continued for the same offence, William Scanlon fined five dollars for drunkenness and assault, John Farley jailed three months for larceny of ten dollars, and William Lemaitre fined four hundred dollars to the grand jury for attempted rape.
Daily money deposits accepted from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. with Saturday hours from 3 a.m. to p.m. Also listed are morning window times and afternoon closing periods, indicating extended service hours for deposits during specific day parts.
The transport voyage of Spanish prisoners to their homeland began at 6 and ended by 9 this morning as the City of Rome carried them away from Seavey’s Island from Portsmouth New Hampshire. Admiral Cervera and his son visited the navy yard officials and boarded at 9 promising to carry home many happy recollections of American kindness as the steamer departed shortly before noon.
Galveston Texas Sept 12 Edward Callahan a private in an immune regiment was shot dead last night and a companion wounded by a policeman who surrendered. He says he attempted to arrest Callahan for beating a little boy. The immunes were paid off yesterday and in town celebrating.
News from New Orleans reports that during Guatemala's recent elections a massive riot left about 300 dead. Natives gathered at polling places, clashes erupted, and troops fired into the mob amid extensive disorder and heated personal disputes.
Five persons are known to have died from a gasoline explosion in a South Street building. Officials say half a dozen more may be inside, with rescue efforts underway in Philadelphia. The blast occurred last night, drawing emergency crews to the scene.
The city schools opened with good weather and hopeful staff as grading lags. At the high school Principal Cyrus W Irish reports 293 pupils in the entering class, about 775 total, with manual training drawing many boys. Bartlett and Green schools show stable to slightly larger enrollments, with some rooms nearly full and others not yet filled.
The new Gorham Street court house was dedicated this morning with speeches from a county commissioner, Bar and Bench members. The building, though rushed, looks dignified though with defects to be fixed, like doors that won’t shut and noisy rubber carpeting. Judges and lawyers filled the scene, the docket was discussed, and dedicatory remarks stressed the role of the court as a guardian of rights and a curb on corruption in a growing county.
Edwin K Parkhurst a Chelmsford resident died suddenly of apoplexy at his South street home at age 70. He had two past careers in carpentry milk routes and grocery real estate and helped found the Village Improvement Association. He represented his district in the Legislature and was twice married leaving eight children. He was buried alongside extended family and notable local fraternal members in Bedford area lodges.
The funerals were held for Margaret Thessiay wife of Charles A Thessiay at No 7 Orleans street with Rev Mr Binnington officiating and interment at Edson cemetery. James Manning infant son of James and Mary Manning buried at 2 Manning place in the Catholic cemetery. Ann Shearon died in Westford at 16 and funeral from Middlesex street station. Margaret Burrows infant daughter of Robert H and Fannie E Burrows buried from 12 Blinkhorn avenue at the Catholic cemetery. J F O Donnell in charge of multiple services.
