Mary Martin of 261 Appleton street rear No 2 was found at the foot of the stairs by her son Robert on returning from the Opera house. She was rushed to St John’s hospital with a fractured skull and died at 6 this morning. The cause whether accidental or foul remains unclear with a liquor-influenced man present and no admission from others.
Louis F. D. Smith of Boston, vacationing with his wife and father, was accidentally killed while cleaning a 38 caliber revolver in a Harwich house. The bullet lodged in the wall as he sat at a table. his wife held him as he died. Funeral services set for Friday in Harwich with burial in Groton. Smith recently worked for Arthur MacArthur & Co. and had been involved in copper mining in Corinth Vermont.
It is September 4 at Bateman's Point Rhode Island. Weather is foggy overcast with no wind and prospects for good racing are bleak. Forecasters predict no wind until Friday.
The Traders National Bank advertises its savings department with semi annual compounding, safety deposit boxes, and private banking rooms for depository of the United States and Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It lists banking hours from 8 A M to 4 P M, Saturday 8 A M to 1 P M, and 7 to 9 P M, with banking rooms at Middlesex Street and Post Office Avenue.
Pittsburg four hundred men return to work at the National Tube plant in McKeesport as preparations, guarded by deputy sheriffs, signal a crisis. In the city the Pennsylvania Tube strike shows 150 returning, 600 uncertain, with no crowding or demonstrations reported at the National Tube works today.
In Troy Alabama on September 4 a mob shot and burned Bill Fourney alias Bill Hilliard after he assaulted Miss Wilson a 16 or 17 year old girl and bruised her near Chestnut Grove Coffey county. The assailant’s body was burned as Miss Wilson, badly hurt, lay unresponsive.
George T. Rogers, an employee at E. F. Lang's shoe factory on Phoenix Row, died after a belt pulley accident. While replacing a belt, he became caught in shafting two feet below the ceiling, was thrown to the floor, and suffered skull fractures and severe injuries to his left hand. He died two hours later at Haley hospital.
Prince Chun toured Frieden skirche mausoleum in Potsdam and laid wreaths on Emperor and Empress Frederick tombs. Emperor William greeted him at noon in the presence of royal princes and dignitaries. He read a yellow ink letter to the Emperor and inspected the guard of honor before an Orangery visit.
The common council met after a month’s vacation with 21 members present. It read and referred petitions on sidewalks and street layouts, approved a $200 appropriation to install a cabinet in Memorial hall for relics, and debated funding for city labor at two dollars daily. Adjournment followed at 9.20.
Two fires struck the four story Card Clothing building on Market and Shattuck near the canal before 1 am. Isaac Whitney’s Toy factory and other tenants including Spurr’s Shirt factory faced damage mostly from water. George T. Spence, a reed maker, was arrested on Worthen Street on suspicion of arson after officers questioned a bystander and a suspected wheel rider.
George T Spence pleads not guilty to burning a building and the case is continued to Sept 10 with $1000 bail. Witnesses include Chief Hosmer Alderman Badger and police officers. Silvio Granato found guilty of assault and battery on Adelaide Morotto and fined $10. Several others pled guilty or were held for juvenile court. Additional cases involve drunkenness larceny and probation.
Agent Knapp reports to state health board about a contagious hospital for diphtheria. the state board will discuss it at its regular Thursday meeting. A Worcester street sprinkler arrives but lacks storage. negotiations involve Supt Streets Brady, Agent Peary, and Mr Sullivan to place it soon. Suffolk street sidewalk extends four feet into the roadway, with a footpath from Broadway to Merrimack. Locks and Canals fence issue denied by City Engineer Bowers. School board meeting to hear report on petition to use Bloody School as overflow for Immaculate Conception school. decision expected Thursday. Mayor Dimon on vacation in short spells. Garbage committee met Friday. Attorney general weighs in on city farm controversy. Fred C Church held fire insurance on the Lowell Card Clothing building blaze last night.
In Chicago on September 4 a well planned arson attempt targeted the Orpheon theatre on Washington street. Explosions alerted pedestrians at midnight and investigators found gasoline, powder, and oil-soaked rags on the fourth floor. The motive remains unknown.
A Cotton Belt passenger train in Texarkana Arkansas was held up by five expert-looking men who blew the safe with dynamite after disabling mail and baggage cars and forcing the engineer to abandon the locomotive. They fled south at high speed. no injuries are reported. The culprits' whereabouts are unknown. A note mentions Taylor the western cyclone arriving in Lowell and being heard at a holiness camp on First Street.
In Kittery Maine on September 4 authorities report the discovery of Sarah Waldron a 30 year old woman found strangled in the road near Old Fort City Point. A suspected Italian worker at the new dry dock appeared with blood smeared clothes asking for discharge and then vanished.
Canton Ohio September 3 President and Mrs McKinley visited the county fair this afternoon as preparations for the Buffalo trip begin. The start is planned for 10 o clock tomorrow morning over the Pennsylvania lines to Cleveland with a brisk schedule at the McKinley home.
