Pittsburg Sept 1 A boiler exploded at Republic Iron Works killing four and injuring seven. The blast wrecked parts of the mill and forced the plant to shut down. The incident left the factory inoperable and workers shaken by the disaster.
Nine people drowned when two river steamers collided in the North Sea canal near Amsterdam last night. The sinking vessel left several survivors, with rescue operations under way as authorities investigated the incident.

The Y M C A directors held a regular meeting with all but one member present. A resolution urged raising funds now to pay off the mortgage, already half in sight, aiming to place the institution on a permanent basis for years to come. The board noted local business support and planned to hire a full time gymnasium director to maximize the use of the well equipped Lowell gymnasium.
In Boston yesterday the firm of J M Wilson & Co filed a bankruptcy petition. The firm lists liabilities of 32 334 62 and assets of 5 833 71. J M Wilson shows liabilities of 57 358 80 with assets 46 924 80. B C Morrison's liabilities amount to 31 490 21 with assets 24 644 77.
At Good Tem plar hall last night Ward Four Republicans met with Chairman Mountford presiding. All members were present. Preliminary campaign plans were discussed and the group unanimously endorsed ex Representative James P. Ramsay for senator.
Truant commissioners start the year by censusing children aged five to fifteen and adding a new question on whether anyone aged fourteen to twenty one cannot read English. The aim is to compel attendance at the evening schools.
The board of aldermen will convene Saturday night with no meeting of the common council as previously reported. A big bicycle meet is scheduled for Saturday.
Herman Weiman about 20 is held on breaking and entering charges in Lowell after Officer Bartholomew Ryan identified him as the suspected burglar from Goff's Falls. A borrowed wheel and a fake diamond ring linked him to the crime scene and a Mars name plate was found on him. Police report he lived with sister Mrs Pitts in Manchester Street and claimed to be a weaver.
Police concluded one man carried out the break in which a glass light was broken a back window unfastened and a doorway entry made. The thief took cigars cigarettes and tobacco including two packs of bunches of cigarettes. The post office money drawer was robbed of postage stamps. Two bicycles were in the store and one bicycle owned by Thomas Dobbins was used by the burglar to flee.
In police court this morning Herman Weiman was arraigned on a breaking and entering charge for the Brouillette house in North Chelmsford on August 22. He pleaded not guilty and bail was set at $600 for a hearing next Tuesday. Evidence tied him to a Goft s Falls post office break in, with cigars matching those stolen from Brouillette, prompting Manchester police intervention. He requested a continuance but pled not guilty and was sent to county jail.
Three drunks before Judge Hadley were John Connerton Edward Ward and Peter Hov ey each fined five dollars. Mary Lemay pleaded guilty to illegally keeping liquor and paid fifty dollars. Christopher Collins a boy faced complaints from Sam Wan owner of a Tilden street laundry shop for throwing stones and breaking glass costing two dollars eighty cents. he was fined six dollars for Apple theft case John Hammersley confessed to stealing ten apples valued at one cent each and was fined six dollars Reiley Woodbridge for peddling without license claimed ignorance of the requirement and paid two dollars.
