Aroostook potato talk frames a social note from a Billerica meeting that drew the C A R D A R S A R and G A R groups, with hints the C A R chief is M A D. The piece jests about pugilists and gear, then cries for miles of generals and forts and rods of regiments to build an army.
Pittsburg stock exchange building heavily damaged by a morning fire in Pittsburg Pennsylvania. The structure housed the Exchange Union Trust Co and several stock brokers. Loss estimated at $150000. The blaze disrupted trading and caused extensive interior damage.
Chester Walsh aged 21 committed death by own action in his room by shooting in the head after losses from a laundry venture that consumed all his earnings. Boston reports the tragedy dated October 29.
The Merrimack Clothing Co marks an anniversary with a big sale of Collins mills kersey overcoats. On Saturday between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. 200 twelve dollar coats will go for seven dollars and fifty cents, same as the old mill price. Show window displays the coats today and buyers with sizes 34 to 44 are urged to line up early Saturday morning.
A group of bottlers left Consumers' Brewery at the start of the week due to dissatisfaction with their privileges and wages. The vacancies were filled promptly as new workers took their places.
The public schools are largely shut today while teachers from the city and surrounding areas travel to Boston for the county teachers convention.
Henry George, candidate for Mayor of Greater New York and Jeffersonian Democrat, died at Union Square hotel after campaigning across Queens and Manhattan. Born in Philadelphia in 1839, he authored Progress and Poverty and opposed Croker and Platt. His death ends a vigorous political and literary career with a new nomination possible to fill the vacancy.
Henry George Jr was substituted for his father Henry George as the Jeffersonian Democrat candidate for mayor of Greater New York. The move was announced in New York on October 29.
Richard Croker sent a sympathy letter to Mrs Henry George and John C Sheehan also expressed condolences in response to her great bereavement. Croker said he never knew George by sight but felt sorrow from the heart.
Henry George Jr. is pushing his father's supporters to vote for Seth Low using their own signatures. Secretary Morse of the Chicago Single Tax club sent condolence wires and urged in his message that George advocate over his own signature the election of Mr. Low, citing his father's life as a stand against bossism.
John J. Fitzpatrick pleaded not guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon and was held under $800 for trial on November 8. He also faced a $100 bond for drunkenness. Several others received varying sentences or bonds for drunkenness, larceny, adultery, and liquor violations.
Republicans likely to renominate aldermen in six wards leaving three new names. Democrats with two in the council plan many new contenders. Ward Two shows opposition to Cosgrove, while Libby and Peirce seek renomination. Venne and Vincent run as Democrats in Ward Seven, with Hamer and Harth seeking Ward Six nominations. Holbrook tops Ward Five talk, and ex Alderman Johnson may pursue purchasing agent slot. Barnard, re-elected by Republicans last year, aims for renomination.

Brown, recording secretary Thomas B. Delaney, trustees William F. Hart Timothy McCarty Wm Barrett Timothy Harrigan Mathew Lynch, and spiritual director Rev. R. S. Burke.
Dr. Fridtjof Nansen, with Prof. Emerson of Amherst College, who served as a vice president at the International Geologists congress in St. Petersburg last summer, hosted a two week cruise among Norway’s fjords. Emerson’s letter notes Nansen’s clarity, eloquence, and engaging personality, and says listeners will understand all he says.
A new horse is being broken in for Engine No. 6 after the retired animal, once sound, developed ailments affecting its speed. The retired horse, still fit for ordinary tasks, has been reassigned to the health department for use in non-firefighting duties.
Susan Itta Calnan daughter of Andrew and Bridget Calnan died October 28 at 25 Keene Street aged 3 months and 14 days in a quiet family death notice.
Hon Fisher H Pearson addressed two ward rallies in Jackson hall and Fourth street engine house drawing about 400 and several hundred Democrats. John Welch defended loyalty to the Democratic state ticket and attacked Donahue and Donahue’s claims about the mayor and city offices. Welch defended Laurence Cummings and warned against holding two offices, while praising Pearson’s political backing by Lowell’s Democracy and noting Republican leanings toward Cummings.
Lawrence Cummings Ward Five Democrats held a lively rally in the High Street engine house last night praising Cummings and urging voter unity. Speakers included Michael J. Dowd Col James H Carmichael J Joseph Hennessy and Laurence Cummings with James Kerwin presiding. The event emphasized choosing experienced candidates who will lower city debt and favor the people over corporate interests. Col Carmichael urged timely choice and highlighted the rival Pearson opposition while stressing Democracy’s loyalty to Cummings. Putnam & Son advertised overcoats in Central Street, Lowell, during the event.
The funeral of Mrs. Mertie Symonda was held Thursday from her Powell Street home with Rev George F Kenngett officiating and burial at Edson Cemetery under Undertaker Young. The body of Alexander W Chisholm, injured in a Lawrence Street fall and dying at St Johns Hospital, was sent to St Andrews Nova Scotia, by Undertaker C H Molloy, at 5 pm Thursday.
John Gately died at his home on 104 Chapel Street this morning at age 71 after a period of illness. An old city resident for fifty years he leaves three sons John A. a lawyer George P. at Hood's laboratory and James a machinist with Kitson company and two daughters Margaret and Mary.

After the Miss Maud Paras dis last night in Odd Fellows hall, artists and ushers were entertained at Mrs. George C. Prince’s home. Master Phineas Whiting, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry I.
