Philadelphia reports twenty bodies recovered with eighteen still missing believed buried in debris. Fire crews worked overnight with little progress as a meeting of company officials and employees was planned to coordinate recovery and identify the dead.
The Lowell grand jury reported no bill against Charles H Armstrong in the prize fight case. Ten other Lowell men including Peter Allen Thomas Tully William Gardner Robert Armstrong Fred Humphrey Martin Flaherty Joseph Dionne William Kelliher and Cornelius Desmond faced charges but were not indicted. Cooley's case was under consideration with an expected indictment to be reported in Cambridge.
Consul General Gudjer reports from Panama that Liberals have seized the Morro guarding the city entrance at Tamuco and surrounded government troops nearby. An attempted relief failed, and observers expect the city to fall soon.
Auburn N Y Oct 26 Czolgoszs brother and brother in law arrived today. The former was admitted but the warden refused the latter entry over questions of identity. The visit was believed to seek the remains of the assassin after death.
A Providence report from Oct 25 states Albert G. Smith and Louis H. Swift, Lowell National Bank employees, stayed under assumed names at the Narragansett and City hotels. Lawyers Barrett and Burke allegedly met them. the pair left Boston aboard a train after a hotel bill settlement. Authorities note no Providence departures to foreign ports, suggesting possible escape via other vessels to New York or New Jersey.

Authorities question who paid lawyers as detectives search the water front and rail routes, while ships depart for Florida and Cape Verde. George Robinson a brakeman for the Boston and Maine road sustained a compound fracture of his left hand while coupling cars this morning. He received treatment at St John’s hospital.
Patrick J. Riley is tried in the second courtroom before Judge Pickman charged with interfering with an officer. Sheriff Eveleth alleges Riley hindered the execution of a writ of replevin for a smooth paving plant formerly owned by the Dunn brothers and left on Riley’s property. The plant, later sold to Merrimack Smooth Paving, was on a freight car. Riley allegedly tore up tracks and excavated to keep it. He reportedly jumped into the pit and was nearly buried before surrender. Many witnesses will be heard. case continued to November 2.
A Mer chants bank director disputed a Washington dispatch claiming the bank paid $10,000 to lawyers who retrieved its securities while insisting the lawyers received nothing from their clients. It is known the lawyers would not take payment from the bank. Who, then, funded the lawyers remains the natural question.
Holyoke on October 24 report Miss Georgia Hatch a local stenographer who knew Smith and Swift, the Lowell defaulters. Her present location is unknown. she last lived at 417 High Street with Mrs Lizzie Hatch who confirms their relationship and says Miss Hatch has been away for several weeks and she does not know where she is now.
Boston Oct 23 United States court judge Lowell retrieved secret indictments against Albert G Smith and Lewis H Swift both tied to Merchants National Bank of Lowell. Swift allegedly caused 600000 in theft and Smith 500000 while both remain at large. Authorities continue pursuit as warrants are filed and extradition looms. public interest centers on recovery of nearly 1.5 million in cash and securities.
An early merger idea would have formed a new bank absorbing Merchants, Railroad, and First National, with combined capital of 1,050,000. Proponents cited economies, larger business, and stronger stability, while stockholders might gain value. The plan has been set aside for now, with possible revival later.
Independent council No. 2 of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics held an initiation Friday and conducted a bancnet. A delegation attended from the State council.
In a police court session, Supernumerary Officer Joseph Farley was found guilty of drunkenness on duty and theft of $40, receiving a six month jail sentence with a $2 fine on appeal. Carr and White were found with stolen funds. Carr was convicted of larceny and jailed for six months on a $300 bond appeal. White fined for drunkenness. Aiken fined for drunkenness. Other locals faced various sentences from jail to probation.
