Money in payment of city taxes poured into the city treasurer's office this morning with amounts ranging from small sums to several thousand dollars. A steady line of taxpayers queued at the payment window as the money was accepted.
Large checks were stolen causing the forenoon receipts to be heavy though exact totals could not be estimated. Yesterday’s take was 46000 dollars and today’s receipts are expected to exceed that amount by hundreds of thousands.

An early evening lamp explosion in Mattapoisett caused smoke suffocation deaths for Mrs. Thatcher Stevens, aged 73, who lived with Stephen Randall on North Main Street. She had been twice married and widow for about 15 years. Friday morning a through freight from Albany collided with loaded cars in West Springfield yard, injuring an engine and a tank car with several hundred gallons of oil, sparking a fire that lasted two hours but was finally extinguished.
