Ellen and Katie McHugh, Irish born sisters long residents of Woburn, died after Ellen summoned at home. Katie, a dressmaker, and Ellen, a milliner, were 26 and older sisters whose lives kept close company with James Livingstone, recently marked by disputes over their engagement. Livingstone stayed at the McHugh house with the sisters before they died, following illness that prompted a medical verdict of critical condition for Katie and Ellen. The funeral is expected Thursday with burial together.
In Superior Court Judge Lilley presided over Hannah Sullivan v Marin and Thomas Larkin v City of Lowell. Sullivan's jury disagreed after an all night deliberation and was discharged. Larkin, a former motorman for Lowell and Suburban, claimed damages for injuries from a June 17 1897 accident when a hole four by five feet in the street caused a fall. Williams saw the hole before and after the incident. Dr. J B O Connor treated Larkin. Hogans represented the plaintiff and City Solicitor Quo appeared for Lowell. The Larkin case was continued.
The probate court presented wills from multiple towns including Chelmsford Pepperell Lowell and Medford and administrations for Malden Chelsea Vt and others. Insolvency cases were continued as Commissioner Manchester of Winchester discharged duties with little business and a few claims proven.
In Hadley police court four intoxicated men Moran Donnelly Sullivan and Howard were sent to the State farm at Bridgewater. Five first offenders paid a $1 fine. James M Fahey was found guilty of drunkenness and larceny and jailed six months for larceny and one month for drunkenness. Delia Cahill was convicted of illegal liquor keeping and jailed two months at Lowell.

The 27th District Democratic convention at party headquarters named George Sparks of Dracut and John J O Connor of Lowell as nominees after a small turnout. Also, Edward Morris of North Billerica, secretary of the Mathew Temperance Society, fell from a tree and remains unconscious with possible fatal injuries.
In North Billerica on October 17 Benjamin Walker aged 56 years 7 months and 10 days passed away. A son was born to Mr and Mrs James H Jackson of Princeton Depot formerly of this city.
Public city hall notes reveal the library paid 3899.10 into the treasury this year while the Lowell and Tyngsboro highway funds remain unspent. The mayor’s department totals 2426.57 with most going to soldiers. New schoolhouses 2000 remains in treasury. Pauper department expended 39290.77 with 1765.06 credit. Gorham Street paving 321821.36 fully spent. Police contributed 6159.54 to the treasury. The mayor’s carriage hire is minor. he uses his own horse. Cemetery payroll is 128.76 weekly. Robert Campbell estate to be settled in Lowell after death at the city farm. An Ireland-based administrator arrived, with kin from New York sending papers for possession. Martin J. Courtney sent 12 year old John Collins to the deaf and dumb school in Northampton. bright pupil, to be met at depot. Dispensary doctors overwhelmed by children seeking ill health certificates to dodge night school. Dr Halpin saw many, none received certificates.
Luke Golden aged 70 died Saturday at his home 37 West Fifth street. Funeral yesterday morning at St Michael's Church with Rev John J Gilday officiating. Henry A Brown 68 formerly of this city died Saturday in Milford New Hampshire after a life in Belvidere Marlboro and Royalton in the hotel business Brights disease named as cause His father built Brown Street Belvidere and a carpenter. Benjamin Walker 56 7 10 died at home in North Billerica leaving a widow four sons and five daughters all residents of North Billerica.
Tomorrow is Lafayette day and Prof Vandaell of the Institute of Technology will lecture at the normal school at 4 oclock on French History. Frank McManus of the U S 5 Hornet visits his sister Mrs W H Rogers at Chathamport after serving in the Spanish American War aboard the U S S Hornet. He holds an honorable discharge rated excellent by his officers and may join Margar eteamship line or re enlist if hostilities resume with Spain. McManus is a Lowell native, son of the late Patrick and Sarah McManus.
