Gen French seized a convoy at Carolina. Cape Town notes British reentry into Bloemhof near Kimberley on the 14th, capturing fifty Boers unopposed.
Two thousand strikers converge on Lehigh Coal and Navigation collieries in Panther Creek valley at Lansford Pa on October 16 forcing the Neuquehoning colliery to close while a separate mob is repulsed by troops after an hour long clash. The troops had been ordered in the night to prevent violence.
Hot Springs Arkansas reports a dynamite explosion under a Jones family home during supper. A neighbor is suspected as retaliation for a land dispute. The tragedy leaves a father, mother and four children dead.
A fire broke out shortly before 6 tonight in a three story brick block on Exchange Street in Concord. The building, owned by James Garry, was damaged as investigators began probing the cause and the suspect from Lowell was taken into custody on suspicion of arson.
Fire on the third floor of a Concord building spread to the upper floor and roof, destroying the Grand Army post headquarters while water damaged other tenants. Knights of Columbus saved their paraphernalia but faced losses on billiard tables and carpet. The total loss is about 3000 dollars. the building carried 6000 in insurance. Finnigan Bros. and Alexander Urquhart occupied floors, with William Morgan detained for questioning.
The bitter 5th Middlesex Republican senatorial convention at the American House Boston ended with Chester B. Williams of Wayland nominated on the 169th ballot after a long deadlock. Joy Waite Smith and others contended, with Williams securing key Lexington and Waltham support. The sprint to a majority involved a Williams Smith alliance and late trades, ending near 11 pm with Williams carried triumphantly to the hall’s applause.

The sixth annual state conference of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution opened at Highland club hall in Lowell invited by Molly Varnum chapter. About 165 delegates from 46 chapters attended the forenoon session under state regent Miss Sara W. Daggett with remarks by Mrs. Henry M. Thompson and others about patriotism duties and historic work.
This morning three courts and the grand jury convened at the courthouse with evidence heard in out-of-town cases. In superior civil court John Sheehan vs Lowell Bleachery remained on trial as defense began presenting evidence before noon. Probate court handled contested will of Mrs. S C Gordon with a married daughter and a younger daughter contesting the will on undue influence grounds. Second probate session saw multiple wills filed for probate and administrations granted to several individuals across multiple towns.
A surge in naturalizations as seventy five men were naturalized yesterday and many appeared before Judge Hadley in police court today. A special meeting of the board of aldermen and a regular common council session are on tonight agenda, along with water board and Galveston relief fund committee meetings at city hall.

A small basement fire at L. W. McKay's bicycle shop on 8 Mammoth Road triggered box 27 alarm around 9 30 Monday night. An explosion of naphtha occurred but damage was minor and no injuries were reported.
In Jackson Hall last night the 26th District Democratic convention saw five candidates for three seats. On informal ballot Kennedy Hearn Maguire won. on formal ballot Hurtubise replaced Maguire. The meeting, delayed 385 minutes, adjourned after a noisy vote counting and protests over the nomination process.
