An 10.15 am box 45 alarm reported a small chimney fire above Mrs. S. E. Maxwell’s dry-goods store next to the Branch street engine house. The Rutledge family occupy the tenement above. The fire burned through the chimney and ceiling into the attic but Branch street firefighters confined it quickly. Building damage is slight and insured. J. J. Smith owns the structure.
An advertisement notes interest starting on November 4 with evening hours on Saturdays. It lists a street level entrance for ladies on 42 to 46 Middlesex Street.
New York Oct 16 misty morning delays yacht racing at Sandy Hook as wind shifts from easterly two knots to ten. Shamrock and Columbia start for the lightship with Columbia taking early lead and windward edge. By 12:25 Columbia holds a mile advantage and judges expect a strong finish barring accidents as both yachts maneuver. at 2:13 whistling signals near stake boat indicate both yachts may have rounded the mark.
London reports telegraphic links to the South Africa theater are steadily failing leaving only scant news. No confirmed battles beyond Kraaipan are reported and Kimberley’s safety is not in immediate danger.双方 forces remain approximately equal in strength.
Gen Shafter is placed on the retired list of the regular army today his 64th birthday. He keeps the command of the department of the Pacific in the volunteer army, as reported from San Francisco. The Middlesex county grand jury met Judge Lilley at 10 am to begin the October sitting of the Superior Criminal Court in Lowell. No one was absent. The panel includes L. F. Hinckley of Melrose as foreman and a list of 18 jurors from area towns. Cases to be presented include adultery, murder, larceny, assault with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering, and arson.
The record lists multiple defendants with charges including breaking and entering and larceny. Also noted are escape from jail, adultery, forgery, murder and manslaughter, and larceny from the person involving several individuals across a single docket. Names include George F. Dole John H. A morning court session jailed or fined numerous inebriates. Sentences included one month for James Tiernan, six months for Angeline Howe, six months in the workhouse for Catherine Buckley, and $100 fines for Joseph Byrne and others. John W. Scully got six months probation, with numerous $5 fines and a $6 rate for repeat offenders. cases of larceny and drunkenness were heard, including Walter Ashworth and Jennie Bachelder.
George W. Batchelder of 7 Arlington street reported his purse containing about $9 stolen Saturday afternoon while aboard a Nashua car in the square. He noticed five young men crowding him and jostling in the center. He reported the loss to police but cannot provide descriptions, making capture difficult.
A bruised woman, speaking at the office of city overseers, said she fell the full length of a staircase Saturday and sought a brief stay at the city farm to recover. She received a permit for two to three days to brace up.
In Lowell a sermon at Kirk Street Church argues that the city’s crime harms all residents. Rev. W A Bartlett urges self examination by officials, editors, and voters, noting improvements in crime stats since 1898 and critiquing temperance politics while highlighting police and liquor-law issues.

Officer Swan reported seeing Mrs Boyd with a man near Maiden Lane on the murder night. He provided a description of the man as investigators follow clues. John Frain, 29, of 211 Lakeview avenue, was jailed Sunday night on assault and battery charges after a quarrel during which he kicked his pregnant wife, throwing her into the yard. Neighbors and police say family quarrels are common. the wife is in delicate condition and received morphine. Authorities fear possible serious consequences. Frain claimed birthplace England and has a prior police history.
Rival factions converge as the 7th district senatorial convention meets to elect a Republican State Committee member. George W. Poore seeks re election though living in the 6th district, backed by delegates pledged to him. Joseph Miller counters, with other candidates including R M Boutwell James P. Ramsay and George L Fowler.
A small pox patient at the contagious hospital has been walking the city for 14 days exposing others. If no new cases arise in the next two days, health officials will declare danger past. The quarantined suspect, not ill but considered likely, remains at the hospital and stays useful in duties.
J F M Lyons longtime Globe reporter dies at St Johns hospital from concussion after being struck by a runaway team in Boston. He was 41, survived by his wife two sons and siblings in England, funeral set for 590 West Park Dorchester with Rev Allbright at noon and burial at Mt Auburn.
In Ocean Park Maine on October 15 Jacob G Favor aged 69 and in this city on October 14 Miss Martha Ewing aged 48. Funeral will be held Tuesday morning at o o clock from Immaculate Conception church. Friends are asked not to send flowers.
