In Yokohama public opinion tilts toward allying with Russia if Britain and America abandon Japan.
Manila reports rebel Ladrones raiding and plundering across Leyte while garrison towns hold. Gen Mojica's officers surrender as soldiers are captured and the organization unravels. In Camarine district, thirty Americans fought forty five rebels, killing ten. two Americans died and three injured. Twenty two of the 32nd infantry fought in Batan province on the 10th, one killed and four wounded.
Lord Roberts reports an engine and truck carrying Paget's Rifle brigade engineers was ambushed by Boers near Kaapmuiden with heavy casualties. Captain Stewart with 40 men relived them. one killed, six wounded, eleven captured. Delisle's mounted troops and Colonials after three days drive De Wet north of the Vaal near Venterskroon.
Gleason did not appear in court as Judge Emmons saw no need for his presence. Experts’ statements supported this. Constable Harrington will transport Gleason to Westboro this afternoon. Fr McCarthy is rapidly improving and no longer suffers pain from the bullet. He can rise and expects to resume pastoral duties in a few days.
Lawrence license commissioners awarded ten licenses under a supplementary grant in a brief meeting. Recipients include William Collins 861 Park Street and Isaac Matchmaker 116 Essex Street among others at addresses on Water Elm and Common streets. The grant remains tentative until locations are approved by the commission.
Mrs Harry W Smalley wife of the missing straw goods man returned to town from Maine last night and was driven to the Nelson place residence. No tidings have been received about Smalley or Mrs Harvey. Lawyers and deputy sheriffs have seized his personal effects to satisfy debts. Rigs and all items in his stables including horses carriages robes and blankets were seized.
The three masted schooner Millville of 651 tons bound from the eastward with stone went on the rocks on the Cape Elizabeth shore near Portland. The crew reached shore safely before darkness. Six tugs aided the scene and there is hope of floating the vessel at high tide. The Millville, built in Camden New Jersey, hails from Philadelphia.
Hudson New Hampshire October 11 George W Clyde was nominated for state representative at the Republican caucus. He received a unanimous instruction not to vote for Senator Chandler. Other than that, his choice of candidates is unrestricted.
Wilhelmina Mary MacDowell sues William Meli bourne MacDowell for separation. The case was discussed today in the supreme court on consent of counsel. MacDowell's first wife was actress Fanny Davenport. London reports state Anglo-Austrian bank officials deny Vienna Bourse panic stories.
Six hundred strikers and several women marched around the Hazleton district this morning but caused no disturbances. Coxe Bros. & Co.’s collieries remain closed until the strike ends following yesterday’s trouble.
The Greek cruiser Miaulis Nauvrchas arrived in Boston amid a weeklong gale, anchoring in the harbor for the first time. She sailed from New York in slow time due to bad weather and will receive official courtesies at the navy yard. Social events are planned during her stay.
John Gleason who shot Rev. L P McCarthy of the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer East Boston was committed to the Estboro hospital for the insane by Judge Emmons in Easton district court this morning. The charge against the prisoner was insanity at the time of the act.
Superior Court in Maynard reports the jury found for the defendant in Charles Cowley v William H Anderson. Cases McKeon v Ames et al and Same v Wamesit Power Co were still being heard yesterday.

Former burglar known as Kiv McCoy appeared before Judge Hanley in Boston police court charged with drunkenness. He pleaded guilty, asked for release to support a wife and three children, and promised sobriety. The judge released him, noting a touching letter from his wife and his intent to rejoin show business soon.
In Middlestre the Bricklayers union held a stormy session over resuming work with non union men at the Collinsville storehouse. Ten days earlier carriers quit and bricklayers were dismissed amid tensions with a European union man and related quarrels.

History repeats itself nightly as James ONeill and his excellent company perform Jebier & Co. in Monte Cristo. The limited run ends with a farewell performance Saturday evening October 20. Many Lowell residents have seen the spectacle. Wednesday and Saturday matinees are scheduled.
