At the Democratic convention in Hudson on Oct 4 5 Charles D. Lewis of Framingham was nominated to represent the 4th Massachusetts district. John J. Shaughnessy of Marlboro chaired the session with G A King and Marcus H Coolidge as officers. Delegates numbered 65 with I Porter Morse endorsing Lewis. No other candidate ran.
Malden Melrose and Everett Democrats held a district convention with 32 delegates. John F Harrington was elected chairman and E J Thurber secretary. Melrose chose George W Carr over Peter J Lynch for committee candidate. Charles M Cox of Melrose won the senatorial nomination. Harvest supper and festival at Hadley Street F B church followed supper and a literary program.
The Traders National Bank transacts general banking, issues foreign exchange worldwide in English French German and Swedish, offers private mailbox services with private compartments, savings at 4 percent per year compounded semi annually, monthly interest start, and a ladies banking room, serving as a depository for the United States and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Li Hung Chang and Russian minister De Giers held a lengthy conference at Tien Tsin. Chang plans to depart for Pekin tomorrow with the Russian admiral and general and his bodyguard. Peaceful conditions reported.
Hazleton Pa Oct 5 eight Italian night shift workers at Calvin Pardee colliery Lattimer were attacked on the road by about 25 women from Milnesville. Armed with clubs and stones several workers were hurt. Other notes report Shenandoah Oct 5 the North Franklin colliery Treverton of Philadelphia Reading Co closed with 600 employed and no disturbance.
A strike by hod carriers at a Collinsville storehouse halts work after they refuse to work with a non union laborer. About 50 men are temporarily out of work while a dispute over employing non union labor unfolds. The issue arose when John Pike sought to hire a non union helper for brick work, prompting the unioned hod carriers to withdraw their labor. Brick masons and carpenters continued briefly but were laid off due to material shortages.
The National Spinners union closed its session at Templar hall Boston with Michael Duggan of Lowell elected president. Robert Howard of Fall River named vice president and Thos O Donnell of Fall River secretary. Frank Mullarty of Pawtucket treasurer and an executive slate including Coyle Dover Fleming Holyoke Fitton Taunton Murphy Taftville Conn Entwistle Utica Whyatt New Bedford Martin Winooski Conwell Lewiston and Daniel Lawrence. Delegates to the textile workers convention in Washington next December were O Donnell and Samuel Ross. The union rejected moving next year’s meeting to Buffalo and will likely meet in Boston.
In Galveston Texas on October 5 the city reports rising storm death tolls with 5000 plus in city, 1200 beyond, and 1000 on the mainland. Commercial conditions show improvement. The school board has secured funds to repair four schools comprising 44 rooms.
A new boundary marker has been discovered in the disputed Mount Baker district. The monument lies in the middle of Chilawahack lake and, if the line is followed, the Red Mountain wall boundary and the disputed strip would lie on the American side.
Election returns show 422 votes with Conservatives 250 Liberals 78 Unionists 42 Nationals 52.
In Lawrence on Cross street a young woman 27 or 28 Lillian Brown committed suicide with a pistol shot near Auburn street. Officers O'Sullivan and Lewis hid behind a fence as a soldierly man in uniform approached and fired twice. Brown died, Sullivan is in custody. Brown resided at 26 Tenney street. undertaker Colby to care for the body. family mourns. Cause unknown.
The Ladies Aid Society of St John’s Episcopal church hosted a harvest supper in the vestry on Thursday evening. Mrs Greenwood led kitchen duties with parish ladies assisting. Harvest table was run by Mrs Charles Whittet, aided by Mrs Warren Bishop and Miss Beatrice Lefevre, with autumn displays of leaves, mums and fruit. A musical program followed including solos by Miss Walker, Miss Bertha Walsh, and Ephraim Jaffry, plus songs and a reading by Miss Mabel Hurd. The event was a social and financial success.

Nine of the ten licenses allowed in Lowell after the census were approved at a special police board meeting. One application, C. E. Foresters not leaving their quarters in the Pollard building on Palmer street. Eight courts and two circles use the hall. Rent rose from 800 to 1000 dollars a year, prompting some to seek new quarters. A three year stay at 800 was agreed, with future increases likely.

The trio faced drunkenness and larceny charges in police court before Judge Pickman, with continuances, bail set at 300 each, and sentences considered Tuesday. A new law allows suspension of sentence during probation with potential immediate execution if violated.
The Republican vigilance committee met at Republican headquarters Thursday with Walter Coburn presiding. Secretary Frank K. Stearns and others discussed a constitution for a permanent ballot box guarding group to deter Democratic participation at caucuses and address a Union Street incident. A vote to submit the constitution and a favorable report to the general committee was taken for next Tuesday.
Lowell city documents an opinion by City Solicitor on whether the city council may transfer funds from a street department sub-division to sidewalks. The opinion concludes that the transfer, via moving balance to the general treasury fund before reappropriating, remains within the council’s authority under the new charter, though wording is awkward.

Mrs Chas Harris was surprised Saturday Sept 29 by about 50 friends who presented her a handsome dining set and dishes. Credit for the success goes to Miss Sarah Guilfoyle and Miss Susie Cushman. Ice cream cake music and dancing made the evening enjoyable.
