Springfield report details that 13 year old Charles Lebban touched a match to paper bunting worn by 12 year old Carrie Cartwright causing her to ignite. She died after five hours of agony and her mother was badly burned attempting to intervene. The boy was arrested on a murder charge.
Paris report says the Anglo-Venezuelan boundary arbitration award reduces Britain’s inland and coastal claims and fixes the frontier at the Waini river. The unanimous decision appears a compromise rather than favoring Venezuela, read at noon. Kruger seeks aid in Chicago to raise a Transvaal relief regiment.
Seven hundred boiler makers among iron ship builders went on a nine hour strike in Philadelphia. The work stoppage halted operations across the plant.
Inspectors Duncan and Maher seized two boxes of bottled whiskey from Joseph Grady and Maurice O Leary as they delivered from a tea wagon in Music Hall Avenue to the Crystal. The boxes contained numerous bottles. Officers later found three flour barrels filled with bottled whiskey at O Leary s home at 28 Wamesit Street along with funnels. Grady and O Leary appeared in court on illegal keeping charges and were held on 300 bonds to October 10. Sergeant Downey and Officer Freeman arrested James Higgins after visiting the Lowell Inn. Higgins s case was continued in police court.
In the Vesper Country Club golf championship two players, Dr. J. A. Gage and A. J. Ranney, reach the final match for one year's honorary possession of the club trophy after stroke or medal play in early September. Sixteen contestants began the contest.

In Hadley J. Roy and Rose Dusseault faced charges of fornication and were fined individually. Henry Aeen keeping and William McCaree related offenses were continued to October 6. Edward Gaffney charged with a gallant act toward his wife was held in 2500 bail until October. Catherine Jelison illegal sale paid a 50 fine. Kate Archambeaut cruelty to a child fined 10. Rachel Summers assault on Deputy Sheriff Stiles unresolved.
The Lowell Congregational club opened the season at the Eliot church with a sharp discussion on "License or No License." Ladies served supper, and the event highlighted Cambridge's long absence of open bars, the Harvard student temptation, and praise for civic governance under prohibition. Ex-Mayor Hall lauded women's work and temperance groups while recalling a tale about a man who named his horse "What Ma Said."
The Lowell Congregational club heard Rev Huntington and Ex mayor J M W Hall discuss temperance policy with emphasis on local option and public education. Police chief John A Faulkner outlined views on prohibition, high license, and government control as options for reducing liquor sales.
In Church street Oct 3 Miss Susie Conway of the city wed Mr John A Maguire of Springfield Vermont with Rev Fr Ronan officiating. A reception followed and the couple will live in Springfield. Also John F McSorley wed Annie F McLaughlin at Immaculate Conception church Oct 2 by Rev Fr Joyce. Morrissey Lane wedding tied John Joseph Morrissey of Newton to Mary E B Lane of Billerica Centre at St Andrew's Oct 2.

Sister Camilla of St Johns training school for nurses is summoned to Washington to join Providence hospital service. she helped at Montauk and in military hospitals, with her departure lamented by friends and pupil nurses.
Gen Fisklodge of God Templars held a well attended session with an evening of songs readings remarks and temperance themes. Highland union lodge Daughters of Rebekah celebrated their 21st anniversary at Highland hall with banquet music speeches and a variety of performances for about 200 attendees. District deputy from Lawrence attended with a visiting party. the event committee included Mrs BE A Walker Mrs W A Shipley Mrs Luella Tryon and others. Mrs Harrington accompanied.
