Helena Montana November 11 The state Supreme Court sustained the constitutionality of the inheritance tax law passed by the last Legislature imposing a five percent tax on bequests to a beneficiary not a relative where the estate exceeds one hundred thousand dollars.
Chicago November 16 The University of Wisconsin football team rejects the 5000 dollar guarantee for a second try with the defeated Chicago University team. The decision is final and Chicago must accept second place.
London papers report the Pope’s decision on the Manitoba school question. The Montreal Stars version is confirmed, and His Holiness plainly does not accept the Laurier-Greenway settlement.

Philadelphia, November 15 At 7 o'clock this morning workmen began tearing down the additions to Independence Hall that marred its simplicity. A 10 foot fence blocks the block from Fifth to Sixth and Chestnut to keep relic hunters away. No brick or board of the old building will be removed. The University law school building at Sixth and Chestnut and several added structures will also be torn down. The aim is to restore the hall to its original design.
The Rev W A McWright a leading Kansas preacher disappeared after leaving his Gkeer City Methodist church last Sunday and boarding a train east no word has come. Presiding Elder Butt vacated his pastorate amid a church circle sensation with a Wisconsin bound brother mentioned as a possibility.

A fire at 136 Chestnut Street gutted the Fay residence early this morning. James L Fay, his wife, and children along with Miss Agnes Fay and a servant escaped with their lives. Firemen confined the blaze to the rear library and smoking room, causing severe damage to the main house and roof. The cause remains unknown though rats and matches are considered. Insurance on Fay furniture is with N. W. Norcross & Co. the house is owned by George H. Stevens.
The Simpson Pond house near Centre village owned by John J. Drinan of St James hotel fame burned last evening. Thomas Southam, occupied with his family, left a lantern which ignited hay causing a rapid blaze that destroyed the main house and adjoining structure. Only clothing and a shed with yard options escaped. Loss estimated at 4000 to 5000 dollars with 3000 dollars insured.
Through the Board of Trade negotiations Lowell will receive a new shoe shop that will employ several hundred workers. The 250 by 40 foot four story building will provide about 40 000 square feet of flooring. Groundbreaking is planned for spring with completion targeted by July 1 1898.
Ten year old Edward Tweed son of John Tweed of 2 West street collapsed at Varnum school just before closing. Dr. Bailey from Sixth street was summoned but could not help. Heart failure said to be the cause. the body sent to his home and Undertaker Rogers notified.
Inspector McCausland arrived in Boston from Knoxville with Samuel Boyd, 21, colored, in custody over the alleged Lowell robbery of Edward F. Benton. Fields and Laura Smith are named in the case. Boyd faces an indictment for receiving $1000 of the stolen money and was committed to the city prison for arraignment.
Massachusetts judge Thomas L. Nelson of the United States district court has fallen seriously ill and is reported near death at his Worcester home. In Worcester, John Bell alias John Labell an Italian shot Mrs Rosalind White late Monday afternoon the ball entering her lung and she was taken to City Hospital.
Fred Orn aged 22 died by suicide at 6 pm Monday at his parents home 8 Halmstead street Quinsigamond village Worcester. Born in Sweden he lived most of his life in Worcester where he was educated. He was an engineer for Washburn Moon Manufacturing Co electric railway yard at Quinsigamond working night shifts.
Henry W. Bates of Weymouth, jailed for breaking and entering, reached through cell bars to grab an unused padlock and forced the door. He escaped into East Wareham woods by noon Monday and remained at large by nightfall. Bates is 20 years old.
The veteran Unitarian pastor Rev Christopher Coffin Hussey died at his home in Wellesley Hills on Sunday afternoon November 1 after a long illness. He served Billerica Unitarian society from 1866, celebrated a 25 year mark in 1891, and later moved to Wellesley. Funeral rites will be held at his residence at 2 pm Wednesday with burial at Nantucket. His many parishioners and sister societies mourn his passing.

White of the steamer Enterprise on Lake Spofford New Hampshire dies at age 69 11 months 19 days after pioneering the resort’s growth He built the boat house bath house and Enterprise which drew thousands to Chesterfield His care over the last year came from Miss May Er Wilson and her sisters Miss Viola Wilson and Mrs R L Stevens The Keystone Chapter order of the Western Star and other friends offered comfort in his deep affliction
John Callaghan 78 died yesterday at 42 Wilson street North Billerica leaving a son Thomas J. Callaghan of North Billerica and a sister Annie T. Joyce. Annie Joyce 19 and daughter of John and Annie Joyce died Sunday at 57 Stanley street. Frank Sawyer 1 died yesterday at 112 Chapel street. Funeral and burial in Catholic cemetery. Patrick Black died yesterday at 156 Chapel street after 50 years as a Lowell resident.
In police court today Judge Hadley dealt with 11 drunks. Simon Bissellomi and John L. Boucher fined $5 each. Edward Cox $10. Totten jailed ten months at the state farm, Ryan six months. Marles jailed two months with $200 appeal bond. Three released, one put on file. Alfred La Chapelle $10 fine and $100 bond for peace. Tennis Dock $15 for cruel driving. James Earle four months for larceny, appealed and held $200 for Superior court.
Today's probate court session drew a large crowd though few cases were disposed of. Wills presented for probate include Myrtie I. Symonds Lowell Theresa A. In the Lawton insolvency court forenoon adjourned hearings were held in cases including Charles M. Dupont Abram Coffin William A Brigham Merrimack Croquet Co and Fred A Maynard. Warrants in the cases of Greeley Son Abbie M Smith and Archibald Anderson were returnable January 18 1898.
The Superior Court fore noon session adjourned after hearing arguments on the demurrer in Cowley versus OConnell. The judge set the case for 9:50 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Special sessions of the municipal court will be held from 9 to 12.30 and 2 to 4.30 on Saturday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the purpose of naturalization. One of the associate justices will sit.

George Cloyd of Pelham was struck by a mail team between Collinsville and Pelham this morning and thrown from the wagon, suffering severe head injuries. His 90-year-old father, who rode on the team, escaped injury.
