Three heavily loaded trolley cars on the New People's street railway began yesterday and ran away down a steep hill last night. One man was killed, another fatally injured, and about 25 others seriously harmed. Each car carried around 100 passengers while motormen, unfamiliar with the heavy grade, failed to control the cars.

Milford New Hampshire May 31 William Weston age 40 of Amherst attempted to shoot a cat with a loaded gun. The weapon exploded causing Weston death and the cat’s demise. He loaded the gun too heavily.
Brig. Gen. Thos. Wilson, U.S. Army retired, died in New York on May 31. Born in 1832 in the District of Columbia, he was a West Point graduate from the class of 1853.
Tien Tsin May 31 Gen Cummins with the last brigade sailed for India today. The German forces are also withdrawing. Eighteen transports are at Taku with more on the way.
Joseph E. Rock reports thieves raided his 324 Fletcher Street variety store last night at about 7 o clock. They stole $15 from the money drawer while Mrs. Rock was upstairs briefly. No witnesses observed the burglary and the store appeared undisturbed when she returned.
The theft involved two men with one acting as looker. Cash totaling seven dollars in various bills and several boxes of cigars plus crackers cheese and canned goods were stolen from John A. McPhail at 268 Chelmsford Street. A watch dog was taken in a prior break and no clues have been developed.
Large congregation attended the Forty Hours exposition at the Church of the Immaculate Conception beginning Friday before Trinity Sunday. Very Rev Joseph Lefebvre led Mass with Deacon Rev Lawrence Gschwind and sub-deacon Rev L V Lewis, with Rev Patrick J McGrath as master of ceremonies. Fr Patin of France and Rev Eugene A Dorgan assisted. choir under Mr Haggerty sang Pange Lingua. procession followed. Sacrament placed for 40 hours of worship ending Sunday.
The old stone mill on Warren street at Church corner by the Concord river is being fitted as a machine and reed shop for Robert Carruthers. His current Lawrence street business will move when lease ends in September, with occupancy expected before then. The rough stone L shaped mill once housed Darius Brown's reed and loom harness factory before changing hands to J. W. Bennett for Lancaster parties.
The High School regiment holds its annual field day and prize drill this afternoon at the fair grounds. Cadets marched from the school armory after noon with a band at the head and several hundred people watched contests for company and individual honors.
Workmen uncovered two skeletons during excavation for a new textile school building. They are thought to be Native American remains from a former burial ground near the Merrimack River in the area.
The store promotes $18 and $20 suits at $15 to clear spring stock. Heavily sold in the $15 range this season as many sizes and fashions near sold out. Marking in the higher priced lines helps sustain the $15 assortment with reliable goods. The $15 line is stronger today than at any prior point this season.
Veterans decorate graves across Gorham Street School Street Lowell cemetery and Hildreth burial ground. Memorial parade forms on South common with corps, militia and bands. Major General Butler buried at Hildreth, crowds fill streets, civic review at city hall.
Camp General Ames Spanish War Veterans led a 60 man procession with 26 piece Excelsior band from Wyman's exchange at 9 am. Veterans from 12 organizations including 2d 5th 6th 8th 9th Massachusetts volunteers and others marched along Merrimack Moody Tilden streets to be reviewed by Mayor Dimon. Cadet blue uniforms and precise drill echoed 1898 standards as they passed Central Street.
The Winchester Boat Club celebrated its new house with a Thursday program featuring a standing sailing canoe race in three classes Novices Juniors and Seniors. Notable participants included Hermann D Murphy from Winchester and Paul Butler of Lowell with Murphy’s Bee the Bee finishing 45 seconds ahead of Butler in the final canoe race amid spectator excitement. Butler was close to the time limit of 474 minutes with Murphy set to race for the Royal Canoe Club’s cup in England next August.
Orlando J Hackett, just sentenced to six years hard labor for swindling New York and Boston residents of 140600, was well known in Lowell. He pitched the Parliament of Man scheme here, reportedly took in about 20000 in Boston, drew a few Lowell investors, held Huntington hall sessions, but left town as funds dwindled. He charmed locals with stories and songs, living cheaply and being regarded as a good fellow by some who heard him.
Six year old Frank Mahoney son of Dennis and Catherine Mahoney of 51 Jefferson Street drowned near St. Patrick's church just before noon. He and peers crossed the Jefferson Street bridge where he lobbed his hat into the canal and slipped in while trying to retrieve it. Attempts to rescue him were unsuccessful. Undertaker Molloy began searching the canal.

Emily Price and Olive Hamilton, known in drinking resorts, faced Judge Hadley for loitering at hotels from 11 PM to 2 AM. Price got 15 months. Hamilton 16 months in Sherborn. Other defendants included liquor nuisance charges, a larceny dispute, and a harness theft case. Two children of a drunken mother were ordered into State care.
