President Roosevelt's Arlington address draws vast crowds as Memorial Day observances honor Lincoln and Washington. The Marine Band leads ceremonies, veterans in G A R parades, and a Gettysburg address excerpt is read. Roosevelt praises Union victory, notes Philippine campaign strains, condemns lynching while urging restraint.
New York May 30 efforts to settle the coal strike progress with no bituminous strike for at least 30 days and possible no strike at all. Civic Federation shifts from in person appeals to stockholder influence targeting William K Vanderbilt to aid in settlement. Wall Street reports Vanderbilt may not intervene but federation plans a meeting in New York after Hanna returns to Washington. President Mitchell vows miners will fight to the end as stockholders are urged to press concessions and a federation executive board meeting looms.
Scranton Pennsylvania May 30 Supt Phil Lips of the coal department of the Delaware Lackawanna and Western company says he has received applications from some strikers who wish to return to work He will restart a colliery as soon as enough men are secured to go to work President T D Nichols of district No 1 U M W of America says if the engineers firemen and pumpmen do not obey the Monday strike the eight hour day and better conditions sought at Swampkin convention may be withdrawn for them He believes at least 90 percent of the firemen will quit on Monday and there is doubt about the engineers and pumpmen
Hazleton Pa May 30 All coal companies here are commissioning special officers to guard their property. A meeting of the engineers firemen and pump runners at the collieries north of the city including Coxe Markle and Kemmerer men will be held Sunday.
In a special session Lynn school board re elected Francis Haseltine as principal of Whiting grammar school and Frances Newnall as principal of Burrill primary school. Both were previously rejected for re election by a narrow six to six vote. Supporters say they were treated unjustly for not being heard before deposing.
Nearly 100 passengers were thrown from seats as a smoker car caught fire from defective wiring on a Northwestern elevated train. Motorman I. J. Lampher shut off power and quelled the danger after restraining two would be jumpers, with the blaze quickly extinguished and no injuries reported.
St Paul May 30. It is reported the Great Northern Steamship Co led by Jas J Hill will construct three additional ships for the Seattle to China Oriental trade. The firm already has two ships under construction to be launched in June or July and commissioned before winter. Each existing vessel displaces 40 000 tons with 630 foot length 73 14 foot beam and 55 foot depth. The new trio will follow the same general design and are to be ready for service early next spring.
In Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania operators say no settlement is in sight and the strikers must resume without concessions. They vow to break the union, warn of hired nonunion police from farmers, and note miners may resume June first or later. Attorney W H Hines is evaluating legal action.

New York dispatch reports President Palma ordered the wreck of the Maine decorated as a memorial for over 200 Americans. American and Cuban flags garlands and wreaths are displayed, with memorial services planned in several American churches in Havana.
In Berlin on May 30 the annual spring parade of the Berlin military district took place at Tempelhof field. The Shah of Persia rode in an open carriage drawn by four horses while the crown prince of Siam rode beside him. Emperor William led the Second regiment of the guards past the Shah, who stood to acknowledge the salute.
Word from San Francisco that Kid Lavigne's arm was broken in three places in a fight last night with Jimmie Britt. Reported fractures include two in the smaller bones and one in the larger bone.
The consolidation of the First National Bank and the Metropolitan National Bank was formally approved by stockholders. Chicago will open a new era Monday morning with its first 100 million dollar bank in operation. Officers include President James B. Forgan and Vice Presidents David R. Forgan Geo D. Boulton and H. H. Hitchcock with Richard J. Street as cashier. E G Keith, president of the Metropolitan National Bank, is elected president of the Chicago Title and Trust Company.
Dr. S. Kimura of Tokio and surgeon inspector of the imperial Japanese navy visits Chicago en route to Washington. He attends the American national congress of surgeons by invitation of President Roosevelt. He will inspect U S navy yards at Brooklyn and Norfolk, spending about three months in the United States.
In El Paso Texas on May 30 fifty two indictments against gamblers were returned by the grand jury with about 150 more expected. The mayor issued a proclamation ordering saloonkeepers to suspend business and close from Saturday noon to Sunday night.
The Paige Street Free Baptist church ladies hosted their annual strawberry supper and program on Thursday evening. Mrs. RE. D. Bearce led the supper with a team of assistants while dining room duties were overseen by Mrs. E. H. McKeen and waitstaff included several local women. Young performers featured in the evening included Miss Elsie Ampleby, Miss Elsie West, Miss Bessie Adams, and Miss Mitchell.
Indianapolis May 30 President Mitchell of the National Mine Workers left for Chicago at midnight. There is still no change in the strike situation. Mitchell and Secretary Wilson held a long consultation and the strike situation was gone over.
Pension changes announced for May 9, 1902 include increases and restorations in Massachusetts with names and amounts such as Charles A. Lord of Lowell at 12 dollars John Holmes of Lawrence 10 dollars Thomas McEvoy of Leominster 12 dollars William A. Cook 10 dollars Carl Berg of Haverhill and Jane Cady of Fitchburg each listed with renewal or widow's pension payments Martha A. Cilley of Law i Fence also noted at 12 dollars.
Newport May 30 French mission honors Le Chevalier de Terney, commander of the Terney fleet, by wreathing his grave at Trinity churchyard with laurel sent by President Loubet. Gov Kimball, Mayor Boyle and Cincinnati society officials lead a May Day pageant with 2500 in line and a wreath ceremony at De Ter nay’s tomb followed by a luncheon at the Casino.
An unknown intruder forced a cellar window into Frederick Fay’s Nesmith Street home Wednesday afternoon and took valuables including three silver spoons from a Greenhalge gift set worth $5 each, clothing belonging to Fay and Edgar Fay, an alarm clock, and Mrs. Fay’s diamond ring. Police are investigating after neighbors saw the thief depart with a dress-suit case.
A May 28 report says Yaqui Indians attacked La Carmen Hacienda near Hermosillo killing the governor and a servant, stealing provisions and stock. Other haciendas were robbed near Guaymas. Guaymas papers call the situation serious but unclear if a general outbreak has begun.
The official celebration of King Edward’s birthday in London on May 30 followed an April 15 Gazette decision. Trooping the Colours at Horse Guards featured the Irish, Grenadier, Scots guards, and Siege detachments with the King and royal family watching as colors were presented. The weather was wet and raw overall, with crowds and notable guests including the U S ambassador Joseph Choate and Henry White.
New York on May 30 Capt Metus of the Prinz Willem says he passed a schooner on May 25 in lat 21.18 north long 73.58 west, bottom up and apparently inverted for some time.
