Victoria B C May 2 The minister of mines received a telegraphic report from the provincial mineralogist detailing the Crow's Nest Pass mine disaster. Seventy eight bodies recovered to date eight more today with searches covering Beaver Deep district and other areas. Authorities expect most remaining bodies to be found within 24 hours as search teams work systematically to locate those buried under debris.
The Pennsylvania Railroad will charge demurrage on coal cars detained at Greenwich Point Perth Amboy Harsimus Cove and Baltimore after June 1. The move aims to curb speculative holding amid the anthracite strike and rising demand for coal.
Purchasers are acquiring luminous coal and converting the cars into storage space while awaiting a favorable market. The plan leverages existing rolling stock to hold the fuel until prices rise to encourage sale and profitability.
Guayaquil papers accuse former President Alfaro living in the city of conspiring to oust President Plaza who took office last August. In a failed self harm attempt in his cell, Hooper hung with suspenders around his neck, attached to the door, but was cut down and revived. Keeper Charles Gregg found him and he remained under guard. the case highlights the cell patrol routine.
In New York at 50 Second Avenue policemen found J. S. Keldain, a cigarette dealer, with a crushed skull and N. Caraman, a tobacco merchant, shot in the head in an adjoining room. A pistol and a hammer were visible. police believe Caraman tried to kill Keldain with the hammer before shooting himself. The quarrel’s cause is unknown. both were taken to Bellevue hospital and will die per doctors.
London May 29 British cabinet met for just over an hour and is expected to finalize the peace agreement with the Boers. Joseph Chamberlain recovered enough to attend the session. A. J. Balfour said he hopes to announce the peace terms in the House of Commons on Monday, though not guaranteed.
The McAleer manslaughter case was continued until June 4 at the government’s request. Witnesses Eugene Mercier Patrick Reynolds and Michael J Fay testified. Bail set at 1500. Frank D Quigley jailed four months for assault and battery on Mrs Jamies Lally after drunken recall failed. Five others paid minor fines. one man missing, and a parole man returned to the State farm.
On May 29 in Pottsville Pennsylvania coal companies prepare for upcoming strike by arming special policemen to guard property. Reading company has sworn in 125 since Monday to supplement 50 regular guards. St Clair Buck Mountain Lehiga Valley and Pennsylvania companies also plan sworn officers. Emma Caroline Whitcomb, 26, daughter of G Henry Whitcomb, died at Harvard street home after rheumatic fever culminated in heart failure. She taught at Plymouth Church Sunday school and was engaged to Roy W. Sumner. Her fiancé died last December. she declined thereafter. Her mother had died months earlier and she remained devoted to religion. Whitcomb was a prominent envelope maker and Worcester leader.
Notre Dame native Hev. W. M. Olmstead C. S. C. of Notre Dame university will speak at New York state dedication of the soldiers and sailors monument. He once led the 42nd New York units and was brigadier general in Hancock’s corps, later ordained a priest and active in G. A. R. circles.
New York reports the Rapid Transit commission and Pennsylvania railroad near a deal on city compensation for tunnel rights under Manhattan. The plan charges 50 cents per lineal foot of track for ten years and one dollar per foot for the remaining 16 years, including side tracks, yielding an estimated $500,000 annually for street use.
Miss Ellen M. Stone recounted her captivity and its lessons at the semi annual meeting of the Woman's Board of Missions held at Central Congregational Church with Mrs. Judson Smith presiding. Mrs. G. Eleven non union men brought from Philadelphia were put to work at the Cranberry colliery of A Pardee Co in Hazelton Pa to replace striking firemen and pump runners. The move marks the first importation of non union labor into the district. The Lehigh Valley Coal company arranged housing and board for its firemen and purge runners at No 40 colliery, its largest in the district.
New York May 29 A circulating tale links the Ford shooting deaths of Paul Leicester Ford and Malcolm Ford to a claimed demand for 25000 by Malcolm who was left out of the will He allegedly told Paul as executor that the sum was his due for signing a waiver and threatened drastic action if not paid within a week.
Madrid reports renewed talk of Sagasta quitting the premiership as Cortes prorogation arguments heat up. Senate president Montero Rios orders a June 2 assembly since no prorogation decree exists, while Sagasta opposes the convocation and may appeal to the King. The King’s signoff without advisers could threaten Sagasta’s grip.
Chicago on May 29 reports the first nationwide butter quality examination by the Department of Agriculture and the National Creamery Butter Makers Association. Fifty butter makers from 19 states submitted samples for testing, with more tests planned to October. Each maker will receive results and guidance to improve quality. Corpus Christi day in Vienna featured a seven o clock high mass in the cathedral with Emperor Francis Joseph, archdukes, and city officials. The procession marched through main streets with clergy and parish banners. An American party including Robert S. McCormick and Chandler Hale watched from the U S consulate along with other officials and a military attaché.
Seattle May 29 Benjamin Ure once Skagit county's wealthiest man was arrested by Sheriff Weeding and Deputy Keese of Island county on charges of receiving stolen property. Island county prosecutors say Ure used his Deception Pass island rendezvous as a water pirate and smuggling hub, with stolen cigars and whiskey found there. Notorious desperado Alfred Hamilton, recently hanged at Whatcom, is named among those who landed goods at Ure's place.
Members of the Rochambeau party traveled to Whitelaw Reid's Rhinebeck summer home for a luncheon. In the evening the 68th regiment will escort the mission to Delmonico's for a dinner hosted by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick before departing for Newport.

New York reports the first day of a red coal famine amid the miners strike. Cargoes were absent in markets yesterday and yard stocks are nearly exhausted after a severe two week drain. Only railroad yards show coal hoarded in large quantities.
Rev ter Ainslee of Baltimore urged care in marriage choices to Hamilton female college graduates in Lexington advising against hasty unions and predicting fewer tears if suitors are chosen with due consideration. The class drew daughters of wealthy stock raisers and planters from across the South.
A strawberry supper and entertainment were held at the Highland M. E. church on Wednesday with Songs of Seven tableaux and sung readings by Mrs. Leslie Wilder. Alice Livingston directed, and supper was led by Mrs. E. Clarke with help from several ladies. A second strawberry festival by the Mt. Vernon Ladies’ Benevolent Society followed, chaired by Mrs. L. Abbott with a team including Mrs. Var num and Mrs. Dewar. The lemonade and ice cream tables were run by Mrs. Hubert Coggeshall and Mrs. Fred Green respectively.
Victoria BC May 29 Great Britain enlarges its Asiatic squadron by sending torpedo boat destroyers Virago and Sparrowhawk from the Pacific station to the Orient. The Arethusa is sailing from the same port to convoy them. Together three vessels have been dispatched to China by the admiralty.
Army orders prescribe that the flag be hoisted to the staff top in the morning then lowered to half staff. After one hour at noon it is raised to full staff and remains there until sunset. The same procedure applies to private individuals and civil authorities.
Aiming to raise funds for Lowell General Hospital, Dr. J H Sparks leads a large committee to stage Lowell’s first Horse Fair at the fair grounds on Tuesday afternoon June 10 weather permitting with a full program of events from family pairs to unicorn teams, roadsters, jumpers and four in hands. Entries cost one dollar and may be filed with William Trust Shepard at 103 Central Street. A special ring and hurdles will be set in front of the grand stand to boost the exhibition with many noted Lowell teams and tandems anticipated.
Major Allen, who has been sidelined by illness, is recovering and will resume duties in about a week. The return signals continued leadership as plans move forward.
