A colored youth in Boston has been sent to prison for perjury. He told a black lie. There is nothing tricky about a car penter. His work is above board. Just at present one is in doubt whether to say Major General Miles or Minor General. Since the shekels began to accum ulate in Lawrence through Lowell's patronage she has begun to cultivate high art. "Busts" of residents of the Spin dle city are now quite common in Lawrence. "Lumpy jaw" is distinctively a cattle disease but it has been known to attack pugilists.
A roundup of disparate items notes Mexico’s electric lighting cost to the city, a 12 postcard Dreyfus design by an Italian, and Napoleon era remnants in Prussia and Austria. It reports tunnels under the Thames expanding toward Rotherhithe, with a projected mile long, 30 foot diameter, $7 million project. Admiral Dewey reports by cable that he has sailed with the Olympia from Manila to Hong Kong. The message confirms his plans and movement for the Pacific post during the ongoing operations near the Philippines.
In West Somerville on the Boston and Maine line an express train narrowly avoided striking an electric car and a buggy driven by Somerville Superintendent John P. Prichard. Gate man Arthur J. Bly raised gates as the inward express neared, a collision was a foot away, and the engineer halted the train after the crossing.

Lowell officials inspected Pawtucket street properties after Henry Lambert and William Earl reported damaged trees. They found traces of the “bad” moth, not the gypsy variety, and advised Paris green as an extermination remedy. The comedy drama Our Jim was presented at the Billerica town hall Friday evening by the Howe school members under the direction of Miss Dorothy Deane of Lowell, formerly with the Palmer stock company of New York.
A strawberry festival will be held Monday evening at the Yellow Meeting House in Dracut under the auspices of the Y. P. S. C. E. society and the Shiloh Literary club.
The ordinance and legislation committee met at city hall and discussed only items before it. The lands and buildings committee met to act on the council order for an estimate of the cost of a stable for the commons and public buildings departments. Supt Gillow estimated about $3000. The committees voted to inspect the proposed location before reporting on the matter.

Constable Martin Conway of Billerica led a liquor squad to arrest two Lawrence men delivering beer and liquor in a two horse wagon. The raid occurred between 8 and 9 pm. two cases of ale three cases of lager three bottles of porter and a quart of whiskey were seized. The team and men were taken to Lowell and later bailed. Authorities also seized two more cases of lager the same afternoon. A man named Martin McCormick was arrested for alleged illegal liquor sales and found with Quinquina products and whiskey. Police described the quirky Canton firm setup and a search warrant revealed bottles at his residence.
Inspector summons editor Charles L. McCleery and president I B Stone to appear in police court on May 22 to answer charges of unlawfully soliciting orders for intoxicating liquors. The case tests section 4 of chapter 271, 1897, with Lowell Morning Mail involved and City Solicitor Qua abstaining.
Mrs Abbie M Lyon awoke to a intruder in her Liberty street bedroom around 2 30 am. A burglar entered by a window and fled after a scream. Nothing was stolen and police detained a colored man later suspected, but she found him too short and he was released.

The State highway commission assigns 46000 of a 100000 emergency appropriation across counties including Barnstable Sandwich 1200 Chat 1200 and totals for each area. Notable allocations include Essex Gloucester 750 Swampscott 1700 and Templeton 5000 Auburn 5000 among others. The remaining 54000 funds are reserved for engineering expenses repairs maintenance and street railway relocations.

For over twenty years since the last extension little work was done on St Josephs church. Carpenters have scaffolded the interior for a week. Phil eas David will lead painters and calceminers starting Monday. The church will be repainted frescoed throughout with gold accents and light modern tints. Scaffolding may not come down for two months.

A recruiting office was opened this morning by Captain Powell and Sergeant Weber at 276 Westford street. Fifteen applications were received this morning.
Lawrence drivers Charles Cavanaugh and Oscar Chenard pleaded guilty in police court to illegally selling liquor in Billerica. Judge Hadley fined Chenard $100 and Cavanaugh $50. Officer Martin Conway testified about the raid revealing a wagon with two cases of ale three of lager three bottles of porter and one quart of whiskey.
Peter J. Labell, drunk in Hadley’s court, allowed freedom on $3. James H. Tinnan faced threats to kill Margaret Tower. Tower testified, Tinnan claimed falsehoods, probation set for six months. Vaselois Marcos fined for assault on George Prempas. Leverett Kelley released after paying costs. Peter J. Cullen found not guilty of neglect. wife refused to testify.
The full supreme court bench ruled that a testator may gift contingent property to a son with remainder to his wife after his death even if divorce occurs. The court held the gift valid, noting divorces are lawfully sanctioned and that separation alone contravenes public policy only with no implication of wrongful divorce by either party.

Miss Lulu M. Monty, recently employed by Santa Clara Lumber Co in Tupper Lake, fell ill this week and returned to the Santa Clara sanitarium. Nathaniel E. Annis, ex city sealer of weights and measures, is seriously ill at his East Saugus home. Benjamin Preston sustained a severe knee injury while working on the Georgia Avenue sewer. Dr Halpin treats him. E J Hylan hosted his son Eugene’s ninth birthday.
