In Washington on May 11 Associated Press reports that Spain will postpone the death sentence at the request of the United States. The delay allows full consideration of the treaty of 1795 and the protocol of 1877 by official departments of both governments.
In North Billerica the Y M C I edged the Emeralds by one run after nine innings in a tightly pitched Urban and Suburban league game witnessed by about 200 fans. Scanlon allowed scattered Emerald hits while Farley backed him behind the plate. O'Brien stood out at second, driving three hits, and Carroll doubled twice for Y M C I, with Don Donovan and Slines among Emeralds’ standouts on defense. Final line shows Y M C I 3 Emeralds 2, with errors, hits, and fielding plays noted by official scorers.
Fire swept a three story Metropolitan Reserve building in St Louis on May 11, threatening nearby property. The flames confined to the one building, which was totally destroyed, eight firefighters were injured including one badly from a falling wall. Financial loss estimated at 75000 dollars.
One of three black suspects in the stabbing of City Marshal Walker was captured near Fulton by the sheriff but seized by an infuriated mob and hanged from a tree. He confessed to the crime.
In Algiers on May 11 a collision between two trains occurred between Adelia and Vesoulbe Inan. One train carried troops to Madagascar. Five officers died and three officers along with 30 soldiers were injured.
A Saturday fire in L'Anse Michigan wiped out the entire inhabited area. Only a few structures remain, with losses estimated from $500,000 to $750,000. About 50 families totaling 300 people are left homeless.

The Tabernacle society of St Peters church elected officers for the year with Miss Anastasia Corbett as president Miss Mary McMahon as vice president Miss Sarah MecCormac as 1st assistant Miss Loyola McCann as secretary and Miss Nellie McGovern as treasurer The treasurer reported the Huntington hall social proceeds totaling 764 dollars.
The Unions of North Chelmsford moved into first place in the league by defeating the T R T s of North Billerica on Saturday. The game was played at the park in North Chelmsford.
A fire was reported by telephone to the central fire house at the corner of Bridge and Lakeview Avenue. Rescue crews arrived promptly and extinguished the blaze before they could take action on scene.
Shoemakers defeated the Olympics Saturday afternoon by 14 to 13 in a thrilling game. Howard’s home run sealed the win. Dawson starred in all aspects while Cummings’ base running stood out. Shoemakers lineup included Dawson, Murray, Landry, Trawsey, Savage, Chisholm, Hassett, Craig, and Howard. Olympics featured Merchants, Perry, Gagnon, Dennis, Albee, Richards, Lawrence, Partruit, and Delforti. Umpire D McCarthy and scorer H F Delvet.
The Young Albions of Wigginville lost 10 to 9 to the Defenders of Belvidere on Saturday. Despite the defeat the Albions, given the size of their opponents, played well. Sullivan of the Albions hit a notable home run in the game.
Scores from multiple cities in the American Association Eastern and New England Leagues show competitive action. Highlights include St. Louis 15 over New York 3, Cleveland 19 over Brooklyn 8, Chicago 11 over Philadelphia 10, and Louisville 17 beating Boston 5. Also Pittsburgh 14 over Washington 9 and St. Louis 9 over Baltimore 6. Eastern results feature Springfield 12 over Scranton 9, Buffalo 8 over Syracuse 14, Wilkes Barre 12 over Providence 11, Toronto 12 over Rochester 6, New Bedford 5 over Bangor 4, Pawtucket 7 over Portland 2, Fall River 3 over Augusta 2, and Brockton 3 over Lewiston 2.
In Burlington Vermont Dartmouth loses 5 to 4 while Brown blanked Tufts 11 to 0 in Providence. Holy Cross tops Wesleyan 10 to 0 in Middletown. Orange hosts Yale 11 to 9. Harvard freshmen lose to Andover 7 to 3 in Andover. Dartmouth freshmen fall to St Johnsbury 15 to 7. Princeton beats Harvard 17 to 9 in Princeton. Pennsylvania defeats Cornell 11 to ? in Philadelphia.
A YMCA team from Lowell traveled to Tewksbury Saturday to compete with doctors and students at Hopi Tal. The group of 25 showcased seven first and three second prizes while Lindsay set a high mark with a 335 foot baseball throw. The doctors and students won by about 15 points.
The Massachusetts Cycling Club of Boston came by train to Lowell with Vesper Wheelmen guiding from Wilmington. After a brief stop at the boathouse a steamer ride to the island and luncheon followed, with the party returning by 5 30. Lynn and Worcester clubs were also seen in town yesterday.
Admiral Belknap arrives in Lowell to attend a memorial hall meeting with General Ames on the Fort Fisher capture. He will be hosted by E. P. Woods. The naval lead at Fort Fisher was the Canonicus, commanded by Belknap, which was struck 66 times. Surviving veterans will have front seats.
The Massachusetts association of Free Baptist churches holds its 14th annual meeting in Lawrence this week with a ministers conference on Tuesday. Rev. Arthur Given will give a sermon in the evening. Wednesday features Rev. John Malvern at 10.20, a women’s missionary meeting, and evening talks on the ideal prayer meeting, deacon, and church music by Rev. H. Lockhart. Rev. W. J. Twort speaks on The Church for the Times. Thursday offers forenoon talks on church building and soul winning by Rev. G. N. Howard and Rev. O. H. Denney, with an 11.30 address on The church and its responsibilities by Rev. W. W. Harris. Afternoon holds A. C. F. programs. Mrs. E. G. Russell speaks on what young people can do. Evening features musical exercises and Rev. Smith Baker, D. D.
The Highland club announces its committees with William E. Livingston as House committee chair and executive chair. J. A. Pevey leads Entertainment while Arthur W. Whitney heads Billiard. Other panels include Bowling with E. E. Galer as chairman and Whist led by Frank A. Smith I. Athletics and Library also listed with respective chairs and members.
At 2 Saturday the Loyal Temperance Legion opened with prayer by Rev Wes ton. Rev C L Merriam of Lowell gave a chalk talk on temperance. Miss Rhoda Dean recited Miss Jessie Taft played a banjo. Officers elected President Clinton Robinson Lowell Vice President Carrie Dicky Lowell Secretary Harriet Whitaker Tyngsboro Treasurer Marion Weston Dunstable Mrs Louise Fletcher Lowell appointed delegate to state convention Pittsfield convention will meet in Tyngsboro next year.
Princess Jodge, Daughters of St. George, held a Saturday supper at Post 185 hall featuring vocal and instrumental music and readings, providing an evening of community entertainment.
A Saturday afternoon gathering at 64 Hanks Street featured Miss Helen R. Boardman’s piano pupils in a recital. Beginners performed a pleasing program with recitations and songs by the children, including Savard, Ethel Brown, Winthrop Bowers, Edith Gray, Katherine Eastman, Louise Parker, plus Helen Aimee and Harry Dunlap Brown. Light refreshments followed.
Col. Frederick T. Walsh will succeed James N. Bourne as agent of the Lowell Bleaching Works. Walsh, 12 years with Hamilton Mills, serves as chemist in color mixing and has acted as assistant manager. Bourne resigns effective June 1. Hamilton seeks a replacement to fill Walsh’s current duties.
Mr. Neville E. Blood of Rock street was surprised Saturday night by about 40 friends, Sons of Veterans, and Otis Allen & Sons workers. Captain S A Pickering presented him an elegant initial ring while factory friends gave a smoking set. The gathering included refreshments and an entertainment, ending in a general good time.
The street department began work this morning on the trunk sewer system at the Oaklands. The large project will drain the entire Oaklands district. Derricks and engines were in place last fall and operated until about December 20. Overhaul under Norman McMillen. Superintendent Cheney and Laforest Bealsci supervise with Patrick Fitzgerald as foreman. Full crew to start tomorrow afternoon or Wednesday.
Samuel and Simon Co hen charged with embezzling furniture from W. S. Levidas appeared before Judge Wallace at Ayer last week. Each defendant is held for the Superior court at Cambridge in 500. The case moved from Lowell where Judge Hadley declined jurisdiction and transferred to Ayer. Attorneys J. J. Pickman and John J. Harvey represented the complainant, J. Henry Morrison the defendants.
City Treasurer Coburn turned over 25000 to A G Pollard treasurer of the Textile school, with the state to follow once obligations are met. Pollard and J T Smith are in Boston and will likely collect the funds. An early meeting will be held to outline definite plans for the project.

May 11 report lists seven drunks released and six others fined or sentenced. Margaret Welch charged with larceny was sent to Sherborn and her daughter’s case continued until Friday. Olive Ducharme fined five dollars for assault on Louisa Levesque. Philippe Oullette jailed for larceny sent to Concord. Joseph Savard and William Martel each fined five dollars for illegal fishing.
Cornelius Desmond, Hood’s farm blacksmith, drove his horse Yukon to win a mile race on a wager at the Fair Grounds. Yukon finished in 2,274 and drew praise for fine horsemanship from many well known horsemen in attendance.
The ad proclaims blue serge and light and dark colors in fancy cheviots, black clay worsted, sack and frock suits, all wool and fast colors for 8.00 and 19.00. It claims these suits are properly cut, well trimmed, light ly made, the best and cheapest offered, and longer wearing than competing goods. The seller guarantees every suit.
Lawrence O Day of 15 George street lies in St Johns hospital with a fractured jaw after an incident at George and Church streets. He says a group of cyclists rode by at 11 o clock Saturday night and a woman rider struck him knocking him down. He grabbed a bicycle, a brick struck him, and the wheelmen rode off while his wife tried to intervene.
Three small fires occurred with only one causing an alarm. The Aiken street bridge caught fire in the forenoon burning several planks before firefighters arrived. A blaze on Market Street owned by Mrs Ellen Hennessey was triggered by a shelf collapsing a gasoline stove and was put out with a pail of water. A later still alarm cited a burning awning in front of Max Powers's photographic studio at Bridge and Paige streets.
Margaret E Welch aged 14 and her mother both face larceny charges after a Chestnut street house raid last Friday. Inspectors Laflamme and Allen arrested the girl and noted a skirt woven from cloth matching that stolen from a Merrimack street store. Police recovered 25 yards of cloth and will file three complaints against the mother.
Fred Cote a wireworker living at Dutton street and Broadway met a violent death Saturday afternoon when a railing over O B Ranlett's store gave way. He fell from the tiny piazza fracturing his skull and thigh. He died at St. John's hospital at 6.15 o'clock. He was about 30 years old.
Officer Holland arrived on Hanover Street at nine yesterday morning to find about five hundred onlookers watching a rough and tumble fight. Four Greeks were involved with men of another race and blood flowed freely. Unable to learn the cause, the officer arrested the four Greeks and the disturbance subsided.
Daniel Cuddy was arrested Saturday night on drunkenness charges and booked for suspected larceny. An owner is sought for a roll of cloth found in his possession.
