Reports from Pointe-a-Pitre and St. Lucia describe a violent eruption near Martinique and the destruction of St. Pierre at Guadaloupe. Ships burned or lost, with thousands feared dead. Barbadoes and Dominica dispatch aid and confirm widespread damage and distress across the Windward Islands.
Paris reports from Guadeloupe state the French cruiser Suchet has 80 survivors aboard. It is believed the colony governor Mouttet and Colonel Gerbault and their wives perished with St Pierre's population. Guadeloupe forwards provisions and the Suchet sails for Martinique tonight.
New York May 10 The Quebec Steamship Company agent reports survivors of the Roraima destroyed in the Martinique disaster are aboard the Korona. Saved include the quartermaster stewardess and seamen Morley Thompson Moore Evans Benson Mayer Leady and three unknown sailors. The first officer and assistant purser are hospitalized at Fort de France. Steel Young Co Ltd, owners of Roddam, escaped from St Pierre to St Lucia.
New York reports St Pierre Martinique, recently destroyed by a volcanic eruption, supported a large city trade. Four or five major houses conducted business of at least 500000 dollars annually. One house had about 100000 dollars invested there. Exports of flour and provisions on thirty days credit were sizable. Estimated losses in flour trade reach 75000 dollars and provision trade about the same.
A Galveston resident, native of Castrias on St Lucia, worries for four sisters in St Pierre. He recalls three years of schooling there and argues that if damage is as bad as stated, a fresh eruption nearer to St Pierre than Mont Pelée plus an earthquake caused it, seeks explanations for reported shipping fires far from shore.
A telegraph from Gary Llewellyn sent from St Lucia states thirty deaths on the Island of St Vincent. The colonial office notes information is incomplete as the eruption continues and the governor seeks to return to St Vincent to verify details.

Shirley May 10. John W. Evans wife and six children fled from their burning home at midnight with only night clothes. The house on a country road between Shirley Centre and Lunenburg was destroyed. nine cows two horses and a dog were killed. Estimated damage is 5000 dollars with 2700 dollars insured. The barn likely sparked the blaze. The homestead, built by Col Thomas Whitney, is a historic local landmark.
Shamokin Pennsylvania May 10 miners are staying away from the mines after bulletins from the Scranton convention urged a work stoppage until miners decide on striking. Local union members report widespread discouragement among workers and business leaders as the day begins with some miners not going to work.

William Webster aged 72 was found dead in his barn by milkman James Finnick near his East Chelmsford home. Police saw no foul play. Webster had lived alone since his sister's death and may have died of heart failure while haying.

Prof James Gilmore, 26, son of Virgil Gilmore, arrived in Cincinnati with his parents after a Rome court sentenced him to three and a half months imprisonment for striking Italian Prof Anselmeo Ciappia amid a dispute.
