The commander of the French cruiser Suchet reports from Fort de France that St Pierre was destroyed by a massive volcanic eruption. About 25,000 residents are presumed dead with only around 30 survivors. all harbor shipping was ruined as the eruption persists.
Lowell Captain relays alleged water cure used to extract information about O Hearn murder. The account includes O Hearn tortured by natives after being captured, and a captain claiming the responsible Filipino leader Thomas confessed. A court martial was ordered to address any abuse of prisoners.
Thomas Cunningham a 87 year old printer of 43 Anderson street Lowell was seriously injured when he slipped under a moving freight train in the yard of the New Haven Hartford railroad near West First street South Boston He was taken to the city hospital on the dangerous list His companion witnessed the tragedy Cunningham had been in Boston six months seeking work and planned to go to Newark with the machinist friend to find employment The accident occurred Thursday evening about 6 30 and his sister in Anderson street was notified He has three sisters and two brothers.
The 52 loomfixers who struck at Merrimack two weeks ago remain out with no meetings of note on Monday nights. A member said seven weavers left Merrimack yesterday due to ill health and dissatisfaction with poorly fixed looms. He added the union could sustain a strike for six months without touching the treasury. On Tuesday afternoon the association plans an outing at Fred Daigle’s Navy Yard.

May 9 Beachmont two men Michael Crowley 30 and J Reardon 28 were overcome by sewer gas while flushing a large tank at the pier district. Crowley died at the scene. Reardon was hospitalized at Frost with a broken leg and concussion. Both men were married with families.
Ithaca May 9 Cornell boating crew suffered a mis hap when a junior shell sank in Cayuga lake. Captain Whittle sey’s crew plunged into the water as a sharp snag tore the boat’s bottom. Regular crew included Frenzel tilesey Wadsworth Torney Ferman inig Ballinger Osborne and Coxswain Atkin.

In Oakland on May 9 the wife of Chilean Consul Juan A Perira died during a tooth extraction. She reportedly had heart trouble and spasms followed before her death.
Gus Giatros faced probable grand jury indictment on a counterfeit half-dollar case at a Dut ton street fruit store after Alexander Lees bought bananas with the fake coin. Judge Hadley ordered Giatros held under bonds of $209 pending grand jury action.
Plumbers have halted most city work as the strike hardens. McLarney and Co and T Costello and Co are the only major firms keeping crews, while unions push for 325 dollars per week for 8 hours. Several shops report no full crews but can handle minor jobs.
Plumbers insist their work warrants higher pay and threaten to quit if demands aren’t met. They claim the value of skilled labor justifies the increased compensation and vow to stay out until agreements are reached.
At 7 30 this forenoon Joseph Karr was struck by a beam while lifting it to a frame at the boot mills. He received a deep cut over the right eye and was moved to the Emergency hospital where five stitches closed the wound. He lives at 50 Lee street.
