Cincinnati bested Baltimore 6 to 1 while Cleveland defeated Cleveland 10 to 4. Brooklyn beat Cincinnati 4 to 1 and St Louis won 9 to 3. New York triumphed 3 to 9 over St Louis Chicago routed Philadelphia 14 to 5.
A morning fire in Durham began in Burkham's livery stable hay loft at 7 o clock, spreading to an oyster house and two shops. Fire fighters from Newmarket battled the blaze for two hours, but the buildings were burned, with losses exceeding $10,000, partially insured.
Fall River defeated Bangor 21 to 4 while New Bedford beat Augusta 8 to 2. Pawtucket edged Lewiston 3 to on a Brockton win over Portland 9 to 8.
The schooner Robert Searles bound from Seattle to Shanghai mutinied 20 miles from Port Townsend. The captain and officers held the mutineers at pistol point and brought the ship to port. Crew were put ashore and a fresh crew was shipped aboard.
Boston May 8 The Ways and Means committee voted seven to four to report favorably on the bill to preserve the Bulfinch front.
Springfield defeated Wilkes Barre 8 to 6 while Providence routed Scranton 22 to 8. Syracuse won 5 to 2 over Buffalo as Rochester topped Toronto 7 to 5.
In Chicago on May 8 the Bridge and Structural Ironworkers strike ends after a satisfactory wage schedule is arranged, resolving the stoppage.
Highland and Home club of Lawrence posted near 5000 in a ten men aside contest last night. After the game the sappers party at the Franklin house dined on the losers’ expense with about twenty Highland members present. A special car took the party back to Lowell. The Freeman Pets baseball nine of Lowell Bleachers formed the team with Prock Goodale, Frank Thorning, Tom O’Brien, Jim MecWilliams, Buck Sanderson, Jack Howard, Simon Brennan, and others. They secured pitchers Martin Meaney and Dunp Day and will face the Dye House team Saturday afternoon for ten dollars a side.
Springfield report says Mrs. Margaret Bowen living between Chicopee Falls and Holyoke claims Irish birth in the year of the great blow and arrival in America on Lincoln's assassination day. Parish priest says she was 88 at marriage, 34 years ago, raising doubts about the tale though she remains very old and frail. Manchester note reports New Hampshire Law and Order League pressuring grand jury with no indictments, amid rumored tense scenes in the jury room.

Somerville May 7 panic over a string of incendiary fires grows after a blaze on Highland avenue in an unfinished building spreads to a neighboring unfinished structure. The combined loss is placed at 2600 dollars.
A Somerset Kentucky report states the Queer & Crescent railroad company round house and 12 locomotives were destroyed by fire today in Louisville. Losses estimated at 300000 dollars, fully insured. The depot burned a year ago.
A giant free offer in the Globe promises the largest art supplement yet. The Sunday paper will include a forty four page color section with performers such as elephants, clowns, and a bareback rider, all able to stand up cutouts. Every reader is urged to obtain the issue.

Barker performed two numbers including a Liszt rhapsody. Dodge read with effect and the quartet earned audience approval.
As shutdown nears at No 5 Lawrence mill, town chatter centers on a sale to Tremont Suffolk or Merrimack. Agent Nourse says no bid yet. potential buyers are these two adjoining corporations. The plant was moved from the main site and a riverfront steam plant half finished before abandonment.
At the juvenile session of the Police court today only a few children were arraigned, most were continued. No sentences were imposed. Drunkenness sentences included Caro line Maynard five months workhouse, Andrew Donovan and John J Reynolds eight months each at the state farm, Minnie A Willoughby four months jail, Mary Fitzgerald two months work house, James Carrigan eight months state farm. James Moen pleaded not guilty to neglect of his child and case postponed. Thomas B Sullivan, Lakeview Avenue shoe dealer, fined twenty dollars for assault on H P G Clough. he appealed. Clough and wife testified Sullivan was beaten when collecting a bill. Sullivan said Clough struck first.
The Peabody Board of Trade held a lively public meeting at Odd Fellows hall last night. The board announced an 85 percent rise in membership in four months and President Charles E. Adams urged biennial elections, fiscal restraint at the State House, and generous funding for education and good roads. His address drew a strong reception.
William H. Winchester, an upholsterer, charmed Mrs. McGowan and her daughter at 41 John Street and stole a gold watch, cash, and diamonds after promising to protect them. Police traced him to Sandwich Mass but he fled before Lowell officers could detain him. Winchester, a known offender, vanished amid a rushed exit with a new Nova Scotia wife.
The Hi rene lodge held an installation led by D. G. C. T. Harry Richardson with appointive officers named. Two initiations occurred along with several membership proposals. The quarterly reports show solid finances with 214 members. Committees include Finance led by Mrs. Ida A. Tilton and others, plus visiting members and a listed pianist. The credit system of entertainment was approved for the quarter with E. S. Varney and Mrs. Nettie Wing as captains.
The Immaculate Conception church hosted a solemn high mass for Rev. Daniel M. Burns OMI who died in El Paso Texas on the 27th. Celebrants included Rev. William D. Joyce OMI superior and Rev. Daniel J. Gleason. A large local clergy and lay contingent assisted with music by a large choir led by P P Haggerty. Margaret McCaffrey sang Pie Jesu and Mrs C M Williams Rest Spirit Rest following the Libera.

J Frank Puffer trading as Puffer and Son furniture dealers in Market street has filed for insolvency in Cambridge. He owes about 50000 dollars and proposes to pay creditors 20 cents on the dollar. The insolvency petition was filed Thursday afternoon by James F Corbett of Burke Marshall and Corbett. Creditors include several Lowell banks, all secured. Puffer’s failure followed defense of notes by Freeman W Puffer and Stephen B Puffer. creditors had attached property already.
The High Street church social in the vestry featured an afternoon tea hosted by Miss Edith Stott. Miss M Theresa White and Mrs. Cc. R. Chapman supervised the refreshment table with several assistants. Musical offerings included songs by Walter Benoit and violin solos by Miss Agnes Williams with Miss Annie Paul as accompanist.
Reports from sub committees update the Memorial day committee on parade plans. Invitations accepted by Companies G M and D of the volunteer militia the Ambulance Corps and the High school regiment. W W Tuttle named treasurer replacing A B Filmore who resigned. The procession forms on the South common and travels at three o clock along Middlesex Central Merrimack Monument square Moody Colburn Merrimack and Palmer street for a brief services and review before dismissal by the chief marshal.
The Free Baptist Ladies' Aid Society of a Middlesex village held an entertainment and supper at the old tavern to raise funds for a new dish set. On the supper committee were Mrs. Joseph Bowers and Mrs. L. R. Winters assisted by Mrs. Lang, Mrs. Dean, Mrs. Holmes, Mrs. Fernald and Mrs. Price. Attendees included Miss Ina Prat, Miss Edith McDonald, Hiram Fernald and Walter Bowers with songs by Mrs. L. H. Hartley, Miss Gertrude McFarnald and Mrs. Charles Nichols and readings by Miss Bertha Bond, Miss Ethel Holmes, and Miss Vena Coram.
