John Wefingwell and Alex Dingwald were shot in the Habst hotel's Rathskeller by Richard Morris a drunk student of Columbia. Morris, who claimed to be Robert H. Moulton, was identified as wanted in Chicago Boston and Buffalo for passing bogus checks.
In Salem on March 22 the courtroom for John C. Best’s murder trial of George E. Bailey was cold and damp. One juror became ill overnight, a doctor was summoned, and though feared to adjourn, the juror reappeared well enough to proceed.

Cambridge March 22 Judge Gaskill refused to admit Harvard instructor Charles R Eastman to bail in the murder case of his brother in law Richard H Grogan He ruled there is no authority in law granting him right to bail at this stage.
Pekin March 22 British observers credit Gen Barrow with avoiding clash by swiftly moving marines from Taku after both sides pulled back from the disputed land at Tien Tsin. No further danger of a battle remains.

Lawrence Mass March 22 Mayor Eaton died suddenly this morning after attending a banquet. He spoke vigorously then fell ill at home and died within minutes the result heart failure. He served as mayor in 1898 and 1899 and was a leading banker and civic figure with a son Fred H. Eaton a prominent lawyer.
Biddeford Maine March 22 Pepperell cloth mills will curtail production adopting a New England plan. The schedule reduces input by about a quarter and lasts until the cloth goods market improves. About 1500 of 6000 looms will be stopped next week. No wage cuts or mill shutdowns expected. The firm employs about 3600 workers.

The education committee also advanced a $35,000 Lowell textile school appropriation with matched funding pending.
Carpenters working for J. W. Bennett at the Harvard brewery went on strike over unpaid dues. Foreman Frank Willette, though in the union, was reportedly behind in dues and not on the brewery job. The dispute was settled and workers plan to return to the site tomorrow.
Pentucket lodge F. and A. M. of Lowell celebrated its 94th anniversary at the Masonic temple banquet hall. The event reflected the lodge’s long history since 1807 with a D. L. Page Co. banquet, Daggett’s orchestra and a program by Harvard Quartette and humorist Walter L. Heeles. Worshipful Master Winslow B. Clark presided as members recalled the lodge’s evolution from its Chelmsford, Dracut and Tewksbury roots to its present home.
Superior Court Judge Lawton presided as testimony in the case moved toward completion. A recess was taken until 2 PM to allow the defense to complete its measurements on the premises. Thursday’s session added testimony from Mrs. Ella Blanchard and doctors Patenaude Parke Bria selte and Huntress.
