Washington March 9 The groundbreaking for the American University hall of history drew a distinguished group. Addresses were given by Bishop John F Hurst Chancellor Wilson Postmaster General Wilson Senators Nelson and Thurston and President Whitman of Columbia University.

Associated Press reports a fire at Milhalovitch Fletcher & Co distillery warehouses on East Pearl street in Cincinnati before 8 am. Losses totaled about 200000, including 100000 stock, 30000 building, 25000 machinery, with insurance covering. Seventy five workers escaped. no lives reported.
An anti American demonstration by riotous university students in Salamanca led to tearing and stamping of the American flag. Gendarmes dispersed the crowd, which reassembled to denounce the United States and give inflaming speeches. Civil authorities failed to stop them. the mob was dispersed and the university closed.

Berkely Cal March 10 Robert Edgren of the University broke the record throwing the 16 pound hammer yesterday His mark stood at 147 feet 7 inches surpassing Mitchell of the New York Athletic Club who had 145 feet.
The March term of the superior civil court convened with Judge Blodgett and Rev. Rawson A. Greene taking the bench. Two juries were empaneled, with no cases ready for trial as the docket was called and adjournment set for Wednesday morning at 9.30.
The Common Council votes to have city solicitor appear before a legislature committee on Wednesday the 11th in remonstrance to House bill 782 which would amend Lowell’s charter. The move is expected to spark discussion at the meeting tonight.

Washington correspondence notes notable features in the Putnam case from Exeter New Hampshire. Warren F Putnam former Granite State National Bank president was convicted of misappropriating forty thousand dollars and sentenced to five years in state prison. The case was submitted January thirty first and February sixth the lower court decision was affirmed by a divided court with nine on the bench. Putnam’s counsel sought a rehearing last week and the court stayed the mandate directing briefs on two questions whether the grand jury testimony contained error and the court’s jurisdiction.

James Duckworth treasurer of Lowell Hosiery died at his Princeton street home after a long illness caused by neuralgia of the heart. A native of Clitheroe England 56, he planned a Bermuda trip today. He leaves wife and four children, with sons Harry and Paul and daughters Helen and Alice. Remains to be sent to Wilton New Hampshire for interment. Cyrus Jaquith, 80, dies at daughter Mrs C W Morris residence 43 Hurd street. he spent last years in the city with his daughter and leaves son Edwin C of Kansas.
The remains of Samuel T. Birmingham who died in Boston last Friday were buried in Lowell cemetery yesterday forenoon under J. A. Weinbeck's direction. Known as a botanic physician, he moved to Boston in 1860 and had been a member of St. Paul's M. E. church before leaving Lowell.
The Sunday school of the Central M. E. church held its annual meeting on Monday night. Rev. Mr. Hall presided. Miss E. L. Harper served as clerk. Officers for the coming year were elected: Superintendent M. B. Thompson. assistant Geo. E. Maker. treasurer Miss Florence Maker. secretary Miss E. L.
