Washington March 4 The committee on naval affairs presented Senator Chandler with an expensive large silver punch bowl. Senators Hale Perkins McMillan Platt Hanna Penrose Tillman Martin Butler and McPnery attended. Washington March 4 The Senate kept a long continuous session into the night as it moved to clear essential legislation The key action was on the sundry civil appropriation bill where, early today, it receded from an amendment granting three exposition gifts to St Louis Buffalo and Charleston thus avoiding the measure.
The House at 4 o'clock refused to accept the Senate amendments to the river and harbors bill and ordered a further conference. The sundry civil bill conference report was agreed to and sent to the President. The House adjourned sine die at noon.
The badly decomposed body pulled from the East River today matches the description of John Armstrong Chanler former husband of Amelie Rives and missing from an asylum for months. Investigators compare features and records as officials await identification.
Major Daniel W. Whittle, longtime collaborator with Dwight L. Moody in evangelistic work at East Northfield, died this morning after a prolonged illness. He was known for his gospel songs and service in the Moody movement.
The quarterly meeting of the Catholic Total Abstinence Union of the Boston archdiocese met in Temperance hall Norwood with 55 of 61 societies represented. Judge Hadley presided as Harry Youlton was fined 15 dollars for assault on Edward White during a strike dispute at Lowell Gas Light. Several others faced penalties for assault, drunkenness, or failure to meet court conditions, including jail terms for four months for Nellie Earle and companions.
About 250 citizens attended the annual town meeting in Tewksbury at the Centre. Henry M. Billings was unanimously elected moderator after 10 ballots. John H. Chandler was chosen town clerk. Selectmen Blaisdell and Phelps won on separate ballots, with details of other officers and budget actions discussed. Annexation of Wigginville narrowly failed 50 for, 128 against, 174 total, adjournment followed for dinner.
