Edward Ronix about 30, well dressed, was arrested on Middlesex street this forenoon by Inspectors Laflamme and Allen on a complaint for beating his hotel bill at a Haverhill hotel. He posed as a medicine vendor and had been released Wednesday after a three month term for the same offence. Inspector Durgin of Haverhill arrived at 10 o clock and took the prisoner to Haverhill.
George A. Murphy of Murphy and Bingam livery stable proprietors suffered a paralytic shock about 9 30 this morning in Middlesex street. He collapsed at the stable and all efforts to revive him failed. He was moved to his Westford and Marlboro streets home where Dr. Eaton was summoned. Murphy had been in ill health for two months.

He pleaded not guilty to counselling and aiding the bribery scheme involving Edward R Donovan and James C Donovan to influence Councilman Lang’s vote on the treasurer appointment. Bail posted with brothers standing surety. case continued to next Monday. Donovan lawyers include John C Burke.

This morning in police court rival street superintendents met as Charles Smith pressed assault charges against J Cheney. The case was continued to Monday and Cheney remained in court in a composed mood, sitting within the railing rather than the prisoner’s bench before leaving on his recognizance while Mr Callahan withdrew.
At the annual meeting of the First Spiritualist Society last night officers were elected for the ensuing year. Secretary George H. Hand, corresponding secretary F. P. Coggeshall, standing committee Cyrus F. Hill Alden Frazier Miss Maria Higgins and Mrs Brainard, conductor of lyceum Miss Daisy Brainard.
Republican members of both branches of the City Council and the republican city committee held a private meeting last night and decided to oppose the mayor’s appointments. Tonight’s city council meeting is expected to be highly notable with possible startling developments anticipated.
