Lyons Nebraska June 28 The school board resigned as a body after the high school graduating class wore work overalls at commencement night to protest humiliation. Students adopted Work as the class motto and charged admission, with townspeople joining the attire spirit as the hall funds were refused.
In Graniteville this morning at about 9 o'clock foreman Jeremiah Sullivan and Louis Gaza were killed by a bluff collapse at H B Hildreth's stone quarry. Sullivan, 20 years in Graniteville, left a wife and two children. Gaza died at noon after rescue efforts. The accident, blamed on a long drilling period under the bluff, shocked the town as 30 tons of earth tumbled, burying workers nearby.
New Haven June 28 Yale's commencement focused on its work as a great institution despite rain. Six hundred fifteen degrees were conferred including 16 honorary degrees. LL D to John W. Griggs U S attorney general and MA to Admiral Francis M. Bunce John R. Mott of New York and Captain Wm C Wise U S Navy were among the honorees.
Rutland Wisconsin June 27 James McDonald and William Leonard prisoners at the house of correction broke from their cells and assaulted Keeper John Holland in an escape attempt. McDonald escaped while Leonard returned to his cell after a severe beating with an iron bar left Holland with seven head wounds but expected to recover as citizens and bloodhounds searched all day.
The navy department announced that Dewey departed Colombo this morning and headed for Port Said, as of June 28 in Washington D C.
In Pickman Police Court, five drunks were fined and one placed on probation. Charles Sargent faced larceny charges filed. Katherine Donahoe, labeled common drunkard, sent to workhouse for six months. Edward H. Davis of Dracut continued till July 5 for illegal keeping. Edward Worsnop fined twenty dollars for drunkenness and assault. Arthur Lamontagne and Alma Gosselin ordered to superior court for adultery. Zotique LeClair and Camille Roussin fined five dollars each for illegal keeping and liquor nuisance. Cosmas Katsikas charged with illegal keeping. decision reserved. Two assault cases continued.
The children of James S Hastings found their mother unconscious on the floor at 1055 Bridge Street this noon after school. Despite timely help, physicians could not revive her.
Three Lowell residents were awarded degrees by Dartmouth College. City Solicitor Francis W. Qua received the Master of Arts, Rev. W. A. Bartlett earned the Doctor of Divinity, and Malcolm D. Barrows son of the late Rev. C. D. Barrows was conferred a Master of Arts.
Eugene McGreevy of Linden Street fell from a hack while en route to the French cemetery and sustained a severe scalp wound. An ambulance conveyed him to St. John’s Hospital for treatment.
Obituary notes the Exeter Street resident known as Bob Moore passing away yesterday afternoon at his home aged 25. He was a familiar city figure and left behind friends and family. Funeral arrangements were not listed.
The funeral of Henry M. Mills was held Tuesday afternoon from his home at 71 Hampshire Street with Rev. J. A. Bowler officiating. Bearers were McMonagle, Greeley, Brown, and Clough. The body was sent to Nashua for burial.

Mr and Mrs Samuel Temple of Bowers Street were honored Tuesday evening when neighbors, led by A W Burbank of Edson School, presented a Morris chair as they prepare to move to Pawtucket Rhode Island. Also note a church picnic Friday June 30 tickets sixteen cents with steamer transfer. A band concert by Talbots Mills Band North Billerica at Lakeview tonight.
Angus Sellars and Edwin Lynde faced assault and battery charges after a bicycle collision with Miss Melvina Lapierre that caused her death. Judge Fisher heard witnesses and ruled the defendants not reckless to a criminal degree, ordering their discharge with John J. Harvey and Deputy Moffatt appearing for the defense and government respectively.
Lowell aldermen edge through a half holiday measure amid urban debate on paving and city contracts. The session covered bid advertising for over 300 dollars in contracts, winding to votes on street extensions, a high school annex loan, and an ices lighting overhaul with a Welsbach contract faces restructuring.
The closing exercises of Bartlett School featured singing readings and recitations by graduates. Diplomas were presented by Mayor Crowley amid a lengthy ceremony enumerating graduates, including Elizabeth Atwood and dozens more, with multiple performances and a valedictory.

R A Greene and Dr C L Sweets.
The Highland school hall filled at 9 this morning for graduation exercises. Supt. Whitcomb attended. Readings and selections included Persian March, The Monk Felix, Our National Flag, The Brown Dwarf of Rugen, The Princess's Holiday, Garfield. Performers included Marion Kerr Edith Maker Pauline Kidder Charles Upton Alexander Jacob and a student chorus and semi chorus.
