Dr Thomas O Summers a yellow fever expert and former chief surgeon of the Santia go fever hospital in St Louis shot himself through the head in his lecture room. Despondency over perceived lack of government appreciation during the Spanish war is cited as the cause. Summers authored several medical works and gained national fame for his Memphis epidemic work. He was a professor of anatomy at the St Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons.
June 19. It is unlikely the Columbia will depart Bristol until later in the week due to faulty aluminum running gear blocks failing the hydraulic test. About 40 wheels in the blocks broke, stopping work until a new supply arrives. The new topmast was set this forenoon and visitors, including Oodbury Kane, are expected today arriving by steam yacht.

Nearly six thousand of Boston’s poorer children toured the ships of the North Atlantic squadron in Boston harbor this afternoon. Directed by W A Twombley, the youngsters came from all city areas and were escorted by a strong police presence and marines from Charlestown navy yard to safely embark. From 2 to 5 pm the public was excluded while the children explored the vessels.
Rep. Cannon of Illinois, queried about an earlier meeting date than December, predicts no need for an earlier session. He says Mr. Henderson will assume the speaker’s chair with broad approval, and the party will be ready for effective, profitable work.
The cruiser Detroit brought the body of Gen. McAuley who died in Nicaragua to Washington. Interment will be at Arlington. McAuley was a member of Lafayette Post G A R of New York.
Washington June 19 subscriptions to the national Dewey fund today totaled 338 bringing the grand total to date to 9140.
City streets committee met in the superintendent’s office at city hall with Alder man Peirce presiding. A large batch of petitions was acted on favorably covering sidewalks on Rogers Whitney and School streets, curb and paving work on several avenues, land damages for Merrimack land at Boynton street, and watering of Nichols and Dummer streets. Many cases were set for later views, hearings, or tabling of proposals, with viewing scheduled Thursday at 1 PM.
Judge Bond charged the jury in Cambridge this morning in the felonious assault case against James Dowd and Thomas Logue, who were found guilty after just fifteen minutes out. Sentencing was deferred. The Arlington hotel case, David and Martin Halloran, arising from a Sunday liquor selling allegation, went to the jury this afternoon.
Genevieve Collett, possibly Methuen’s oldest resident, died at home on Howe Street Methuen at age 104 years eight months. A native of Canada, she had lived in Methuen after moving from Lawrence and remained unmarried.
An exhibit of drawings by the Tewksbury high school pupils opens in Pickering hall on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, June 21 and 22. It showcases work from the first year under a special supervisor's direction.
A crowded city hall heard Mayor Crowley weigh a contract between the board of health and Dixon Garbage and Cremator of Toledo. Opponents argued labor and cost issues while Dixon director Gilkyson defended plans for Lowell labor and a sanitary system. In this morning’s police court Judge Fisher dealt with two drunks named Filen J. Sullivan and Jeremiah Sullivan, each fined $6. A boy, Frank V. Mowatt, was arrested for stealing cherries from J. F. O Donnell and is held at $1000 for juvenile session Friday. Moses Lacourse faced non support charges and, after testimony, was placed on probation for six months with supervision by Probation Officer Tuttle. Annie Tivnan received one month in the work house for assault on Mary A. Dwyer, with a condition to move from the neighborhood. she failed to comply, so the sentence stands. William Gumb’s non support case was placed on file.
Funeral services for John F Harrigan were held at St Andrews Church North Billerica at 1:00 a m with Rev Fr McRory and Rev Fr Paquette officiating Delegations from Celtics Division 8 AOH and MTS North Billerica attended The burial followed at the Catholic cemetery in Lowell Bearers included James Bradley Martin Conway Steven Gallagher John Rourke John ONeill and John Murray The Pie Jesu and No Cross No Crown were sung by Thomas P Boulger The Bradley funeral followed yesterday at 2 from 45 Kidder Street with services at St Peters Church at 2 30 conducted by Rev Fr Saunders Bearers included John Bennie John Maguire James McCarroll and William Moon The burial was in the Catholic cemetery.
