Electricity's role in transportation as seen in 1900s critique
A Scientific American contributor argues electricity will not fully replace steam for major railways due to inconveniences with heavy long-haul transport. He notes steam locomotives’ continued superiority for long-distance freight, while electricity excels in urban and suburban transit and small roads. Water transport sees less impact, with cranes and towage shifting toward electric locomotives. oceanic steamers use electricity mainly for lighting and steering gear, and warships for turrets and hoists.
