New York June 9 futures firm at the opening with July near 11.94 and August 11.28 as prices rose. The market showed strong activity amid warnings of shorts, talk of a July corner, crop damage, and a cautious, unsettled dampening after a day of gains and then sharp realizations.
The Mississippi surged past St Louis at 8 to 10 miles per hour, peaking at 37.5 feet on June 8, the highest flood since 1858. Dangers include undermined buildings and a growing death toll with dozens missing in Madison, Granite City, Venice, and Newport areas. Relief and aid efforts are underway as World River Bulletin notes rapid receding.

The Merchants Exchange has raised seven thousand dollars for flood relief, routing one thousand to Topeka and Kansas City, while five thousand funds will aid local suffering. Twenty five people with household effects were rescued from Mullanphy island after days marooned. A levee break at Kemper's landing floods Illinois farms. Crop damage between St Louis and Cape Girardeau may reach two million dollars. The Mississippi River runs about forty miles wide below the city, hindering rescue efforts and possibly costing lives.
Memphis Tenn June 9 Some concern is felt over the Mississippi flood to the north with a 44 foot stage expected at Memphis. Large forces repair breaks in Arkansas levees north of the city and water breaches the levee, flooding a sizable area behind it.
Flood conditions east of St. Louis disrupt multiple railroads with embankment danger near the Merchants Bridge. Eastbound service on the Mer chants line curtailed while some routes operate slowly or divert to Alton by boat. The relay station remains waterlogged as lines like Van dalle and others run cautiously.
In Forest Mississippi on June 9 the shooting from ambush left four black men and one black woman dead and eight to ten badly beaten. Most other black residents were ordered to leave amid intense regional tension, with reports pointing to assailants from the area where Craft resided.
At the American Book Sellers association dinner in New York, Rev. Thomas Dixon Jr. discussed race and the negro question. He argued prejudice arises from self preservation and warned of 60 million negroes in fifty years, urging solutions from elevation to our level, sinking to them, or removal. Mayor W Willard Palmer of Grand Rapids spoke on reviving the book trade amid a current crisis.
Chicago detectives report new clues in the Danilovsky murder case found twenty feet north of the body site near a weeds clump. A handkerchief and dress fragment suggest a struggle and weaken suspicions on Servonia Chicka and his wife, who are jailed. Police believe the woman was lured to a lonely drainage area and murdered for her money.
Greenfield marked its 150th incorporation with a daylong program led by Governor Bates and top officials. A 13-gun salute opened events from Poet's Seat, followed by a half mile floral parade reviewed by state and local leaders, with Governor Bates staff, Lt. Gov. Rome June 9 The Vatican and France debate how President Loubet should treat the Pope during the Rome visit. If France does not change, Loubet is not expected to seek an audience, avoiding a rupture between France and the Vatican. Officials believe ignoring each other may preserve current church state relations.
Oscar Allen age fifty was found dead in his Howe block Middlesex street room shortly after six last evening with gas fumes in the closed room. Medical Examiner Meigs ruled death due to gas poisoning but could not determine if it was self inflicted or accidental. The valve on a patent gas meter was open and a 26 cent piece operated the mechanism. Allen’s brother in law forced entry and found him in bed in underclothes. Allen married with one son, a Boston City Hospital worker, and had worked at Lowell Machine Shop and recently in Essex at an ice company. the body was taken to Young & Co. undertakers.
Glens Falls New York June 9 Sam Pasco a lawless resident of Thursman town has been seized for setting fire to standing timber. Pasco son of Leander Pasco who was murdered years ago by Col Wood faces charges of starting numerous early fires in the Adirondacks.
A Lowell man and Boston dispatch report Governor Bates will ask the Legislature to repeal the section of the liquor law permitting sale of imported liquor in original packages. He cites 1890 federal changes and urges immediate action to align with public opinion and state policy. Attorney General Parker concurs the clause is no longer necessary and urges Massachusetts to remove it.
In Lawrence court Nicholas Marchella and Nicholas Carpenter, known as the two Nicks, faced charges after a chased runaway horse and a barrel of whiskey. Marchella is charged with illegally keeping liquor and Carpenter with drunkenness. both pleaded not guilty and were continued to June 13. Other docket items include Joe Gamache charged with assault and battery and bail set at 200 dollars, and Edmund Champagne and Frank Gallagher handling drunkenness and probation terms respectively.
A blaze at the Brooklyn Cooperage plant in South Boston caused $140,000 in losses and left an employee badly burned while firemen were overcome by smoke. Joseph Wood alerted crews, reentered the building to grab tools, and suffered severe head and facial burns after leaping through flames. The three story wooden complex housed 30,000 barrels on the second floor and valuable machinery on the third. losses include $100,000 in stocks and $40,000 in buildings. The firm list its headquarters in Brooklyn and Lowell M. Palmer serves as treasurer.
In Seattle on June 9 two youths with a pistol robbed eight streetcar passengers of about 30 dollars and several watches. They forced the conductor and motorman inside while one searched travelers and the other held the weapon. No resistance was offered.
