Kingston January reports confirm the sinking of the Spanish torpedo boat destroyer Terror by the battleship Oregon off Santiago harbor. The Oregon sighted a long craft near the shore, fired a 13 inch shell after improper signaling, and the vessel sank with all hands while attempting to reach Santiago harbor.
Joseph Hall claimed Derry New Hampshire as his home when arrested on Moore Street by Officer John Fox around eight this morning. He offered a team for sale in Little Canada and at Davis's corner livery stable, appeared intoxicated, and denied ownership. Hall was jailed on drunkenness while authorities in Derry were alerted of a stolen team. a more serious charge awaits.
News from Mole St Nicholas Haiti dated June 6 notes New York advices deny the Port Antonio claim that the Oregon sunk the Spanish torpedo destroyer Terror. In New Hampshire June 6 officials seek support for a permanent Fort Constitution military post by circulating a defense petition to Congress.
The United States auxiliary cruiser Resolute formerly Yorktown, commanded by Joe Waton with chief engineer Frank H. Conant, fled two Spanish cruisers in Cuban waters and reached Mole St. Nicholas. On board engineer Ralph R. Bachelder from Lowell, class of 96, had joined after leaving U S S Enterprise. The ship sailed May 24 from New York carrying coal torpedoes mines and dynamite for the Vesuvius and could reach 20 mph relying on speed to avoid capture. No word has reached relatives of the Lowell men aboard since departure.
From Santiago, a correspondent reports the American fleet bombarded Santiago for 45 minutes but shells failed to hit the forts. The Spanish did not return fire, leaving the engagement inconclusive. Also reported: two black men lynched in Clarksville, Missouri, with two more possibly to be killed for the murder of City Marshal Walter Meloan.
Major Malster of Baltimore forwards a letter from Col. Edward F. Jones commander of the Sixth Massachusetts recalling the regiment’s two Baltimore passages in 1861 and 1861 and thanking Baltimore's people for their reception.
Margaret White aged 16 from Front street was found dead drunk in the woods near Du rant street after 11 PM Saturday. Neighbors reported cries and a bareheaded girl fleeing. A young man, intoxicated, was found nearby and later jailed. a party of six had been drinking in the woods.
A three week old infant’s body was recovered in the Merrimack river near the Aiken Street Bridge. Undertaker Brooks collected the body for the morgue. No clues to identity or to who disposed of the child.
Dr. Benjamin Hartwell of Ayer examined the infant found on the Merrimack bank near the Lawrence mill at the undertaking rooms of J. W. Brooks. He found no definite signs of murder and signed the death return with cause of death unknown.
Ringling Bros great circus to exhibit at the fair grounds on Thursday June 9 with 2 and 8 pm shows. A zoological garden includes 25 elephants, an aquarium and aviary, and a 30-section free street parade. Over 100 acts with 400 horses and 300 performers. Reserved seats at Ellingwood's.
At Camp Alger Virginia on June 5 1898 the Ninth Massachusetts Volunteers and the Thirty third Michigan Volunteers formed a provisional brigade of the Second Army Corps with Col Fred B Bogan of the Ninth as senior officer to command the brigade until further notice Captain Daniel B Devoe appointed assistant adjutant general. Chaplain Murphy led mass and the Ninth's day included guard duty and camp improvements while regimental life buzzed with visits and logistics as officers and soldiers celebrated the news and prepared for duties ahead.
Mrs Josephine Mellin Southwick Ayer widow of Dr James C Ayer left $50600 to Pennsylvania Hospital Philadelphia in honor of professional services from its staff. Her son Frederick F Ayer added $25000 bringing total to $75000 for the Ayer Clinical Laboratory to study germs and germ diseases. Building to be memorialized to his mother with plans already underway by Philadelphia architects.
A Lowell Bar Association meeting in the police court discussed the death of John F. Frye late associate justice. Judge Samuel P. Hadley presided and others were named as bearers and a resolutions committee. Funeral is set for 2 pm at Lowell Cemetery chapel.

Also noted are the deaths of Sarah McAleer, Augustus Coburn of Dracut, and Carrie M. Underwood, who died from carbolic acid ingestion. Families and survivors are listed, with brief biographical and local ties.
Funeral services were held Sunday for John Pardelais at the Troops of Undertaker chapel with burial in Edyon cemetery attended by a large Greek colony delegation. Arthur B Dodge of Lowell, drowned in Portland harbor, was honored at Chelmsford Street Free Baptist church with Knights of Pythias and railroad workers in attendance and Pythias ritual at Edson cemetery.
