Gloucester July 30 Four councilmen Hadley Friend Lane and Gordon were discharged from water department roles as an illegal employment by city officials is confirmed. The city solicitor advised the practice violated ordinance, prompting a policy that no councilman be hired across departments. Some may resign council seats to stay in city service.
In Newark two men sought shelter in a railroad shanty on the New York & Long Branch Division. Lightning struck the structure during a storm yesterday. Frank A. Silvers and his grandfather Edward Wade were found unconscious. Wade died from burns and disfigurement. Riley and a helper inside were also affected. Two nearby bridge tenders were knocked unconscious.
South Framingham July 30 Corporal Chase of Company M 5th Regiment MVV of Hudson testified before Associate Judge Wakefield and swore out a complaint charging assault against Private William R Keefe of the same company for biting him on the left cheek at the State campground last Friday.
The Traders National Bank offers general banking with foreign exchange in English French German and Swedish money. It provides safety deposit boxes private rooms nine ladies rooms and savings at 4 percent compounded semi annually with monthly interest. The bank operates 8 to 4 weekdays and 8 to 1 Saturday with evening hours 7 to 9. Located at 3 to 46 Middlesex Street and 11 to 24 Post Office Avenue.
The City Water Front association ordered a general strike affecting San Francisco Oakland Mission Rock and Port Costa. About 25 000 workers including porters packers warehousemen hoisting engineers clerks and firemen halted work since mid May, risking a near shutdown of the port and wholesale manufacturing districts in sympathy with locked out teamsters.
Pittsburg July 30 The general impression is that the great steel strike will be declared off soon and an amicable agreement is in sight. The Amalgamated association pressed for revised prices while the steel side argued union mill definitions. Secretary Williams communicated with New York as Shaffer's board met and adjourned for lunch in good humor.
W R Keefe once private in Marlboro's Company M of the 5th regiment faced court for an alleged assault on Corporal Ernest L Chase in camp last week. He pleaded not guilty and the case was continued to August 8. Keefe was drummed out of camp last Saturday.
The Ward Line steamer Morro Castle from Havana passed Sandy Hook at 10 33 this morning with Governor General Wood on board.
Brockton July 30. The Brockton Central Labor union protests the city fire department using permanent firemen as painters carpenters and machinists on repairs. Alderman Meade presented a petition urging an investigation. A committee of investigation was ordered with Meade Bradford and council members to serve.
New York on July 3 reports the return of striking garment workers to shops is stalled by vip contractors forming an association to control hiring and distribution, prolonging disruption in the industry.
The First Congregational church of Chicago will vote on Wednesday night on calling Rev. Dr. W A Bartlett of Lowell Massachusetts to the pastorate, to succeed Rev H B Goodwin. Bartlett has led Oak Park and Lake View congregations and is a Dartmouth graduate. He is presently spending a month with his family at Ocean Park.
A Plymouth home of George Griffin on Atlantic street was struck by lightning in the early morning. The bed and bedding were set afire but a child sleeping there was saved. The bolt damaged the kitchen floor and other rooms as water from a waterspout and heavy rain drenched the house. Witnesses noted a sticky jellyfish like substance on sidewalks.
Hyman Rubin, 19, of 9 Cooper street, was struck by surface car 340 at the Washington and Castle streets crossing after failing to hear the gong due to an elevated track. He carried a basket of eggs when he stepped into the car’s path and was knocked down despite the motorman’s braking efforts.
A man sustained a severe injury when a car ran over his right leg causing a compound fracture. Police applied a tourniquet and he was rushed to City hospital where doctors amputated the leg below the knee. His left leg remained badly bruised.
A 20 year old woman, Miss Marie Perrant, was struck by the 10 29 express on a railroad bridge at Goffs Falls yesterday forenoon and hurled into the river. She died instantly. The body was brought to Manchester New Hampshire. She resided at 144 Cedar street.

A closet fire on the second floor of the two and a half story frame house at 497 Moody Street threatened the building. Patrick Gilbride owned the property and two families, A. N. Boulais and Gustave M. Bourgeois, resided there. Firefighters from box 152 extinguished the blaze in about thirty minutes. Origin of the fire unknown. James Fitzgerald was arrested just before noon for creating a disturbance in his brother D T Fitzgerald's Market Street saloon. He entered as if running the place, climbed over the bar, fled toward Mansur block, and was found by Lieut Webster and Patrolman Hickson. En route to the police station he shouted loudly and offered to leave the city if released before being locked up.
Edward Worsnip was arrested after stealing shoes and a hat from Jeremiah Casey who slept on the South common. Bystanders followed him until Constable Richard Flynn and Officer Cawley placed him under arrest and returned to the common discovering Casey still asleep minus his belongings. Both men were sent to the Station awaiting disposition.

General Miles, national commander, will open the convention. Resolutions were adopted on Thomas F. Connors’s death and initial plans were made for a Pelham outing.

Reports of ex-Councilman Roark’s appointment were unfounded and several French Canadian groups discussed the rumor. The wedding of Tousaind Goyette and Julia L Hereux was held yesterday at St Joseph Chapel at 7 am with Rev Fr Gagnon officiating. Francis Hereux witnessed for the bride’s family. A reception followed at the bride’s Dracut home and the couple will honeymoon in Marlboro.
Fireworks on South Common for Wednesday's concert will be nearly as extensive as the Fourth of July show. The area will be roped off as before, with no seating provided. The display arises from the Pain company's inability to set up Niagara Falls and elephant designs in time for the Fourth.
