Manila reports $20,000 taken during soldiers pay at Santa Cruz guard house yesterday. Officials say it appears to be the work of soldiers. Major Canby left the safe in the guard house and thieves abstracted its contents while he was away.
Gloucester July 27 Mrs William Packey 37 previously attempted suicide. She drank an ounce of carbolic acid and the dose proved fatal. A brother and sister reside in Lowell.
Bristol R L July 27 The Constitution is expected to start for Newport today. She sustained no material damage from contact with the sunken reef Thursday though there is a slight dent in the starboard side of the ballast fin. The craft is now practically ready for racing again.
Shamrock Second with Erin departed Gourock for New York amid great enthusiasm and public interest as the clipper set sail on the transatlantic voyage.
The detachment fought its way to Lembobo, 16 miles away, with ten killed or wounded and a few missing, as reported in the campaign dispatches.
Holyoke, July 27. John Lynch, about 45, killed himself with poison at 79 Hamilton street after heavy drinking. He had contemplated the act for days, left notes addressing his wife and sister Maggie Lynch of Shirley, and belonged to the United Order of Pilgrim Fathers Mt Monotuck colony. He had recently returned from Providence seeking work and had lived apart from his wife since moving to Holyoke.

Mrs. Geneva Dunn 29, wife of Ernest Dunn, died early this morning at 738 Stevens street from gas poisoning. A locked room, stopped keyhole, and full gas cock indicate deliberate self harm while visiting Mr. Leroy W. Dickey’s home. Dr. Irish certified death by own action amid prolonged illness. Dunn, once a contractor, has been in Andover for work.
Hon. Charles H. Allen, Governor of Porto Rico, has come back to Lowell after four nights in sleeping cars. He plans rest and woods, and notes he has not resigned as Porto Rico governor. He says Washington has treated him well.
Worcester July 26 John Higgins 42 of Lowell was arrested by Officers O Connor and Walbridge on Mechanic street after claiming a fall. He suffered only a scraped back from the pavement, received a free ride to the city hospital and back, and was jailed on a charge of drunkenness.
Boston July 26. Frank C Stead 31 an employee of the Boston elevated railroad fell 30 feet from a derrick at the Lincoln wharf power house striking concrete flooring. He died en route to Massachusetts general hospital. Body taken to the morgue. Stead resided at 112 Main street Charles town.
The mangled body of George F. Hoell was found on the railroad near Green Lodge station Westwood this morning. He had been employed on Peter Wetsel's farm in Westwood and likely walked from Readville or Canton Junction to the scene. He died instantly after being struck by a late train.
The British bark Lizzie Bell, Captain Whelan, sailing to New Castle, N. S. W., was wrecked at Cape Gwent, New Zealand. Twelve crew members are missing. Built in Sunderland in 1887 and owned in Liverpool.
The White Star Line steamer Celtic sailed from Liverpool today on her maiden voyage to New York carrying 250 saloon 100 second cabin and 300 steerage passengers.

Coroner Hay identifies a deceased man struck by a train as Blondin by facial features and India ink marks on the left arm. No papers or identification found on clothing. Marshal Harvey has informed Boston and awaits a reply. The body is to be buried tomorrow per current plan.
Boston reports an overnight blaze at the D and L Slade spice mill on Mill street Revere destroys the two story wooden building and damages stock estimated at 30000 with 5000 on mill and machinery. Chief Henry A Spencer of Chelsea fire department was severely injured, having fractures and head neck injuries, now on the dangerous list at Frost hospital. Firefighters fought flames from both sides, a plank walk collapse and two crewmen were knocked into the creek but rescued.
New York July 27 James Allen 24 was shot twice in a flat corridor after a confrontation with Patrick Tray who pursued him over dispute involving a wife Miller. Allen pursued by a mob, Tray arrested after a scuffle. Tray says he shot the wrong man. Allen may die.
Noel Ducharme of Hall street Little Canada, aged 78, returned Thursday after leaving home last Saturday to seek farm work in Pelham. Police were alerted when his family could not contact him, but he arrived safely back at his Hall street residence.
The annual Methuen grange picnic at Canobie Lake drew over two thousand people from Methuen Andover North Andover Tewksbury West Harverhill West Newbury Salem and Pelham New Hampshire. Attendees enjoyed roller skating boating bowling and dancing all day with an orchestra providing music. In afternoon sports Conley Bird won the three legged race with Chiney Alter second. E A McCarthy won the sack race with J Lyons second. John Cordingly won the potato race with Fred Bird second. Walter Rothera won the fat man's race with W W Colby second. William Cookson won the obstacle race with John O'Hearn second. A Holt won the 50 yard dash with William Cookson second. Joseph Soucy won the greased pig event.
Worcester July 6 Rev John F Lehy SJ has been reappointed president of Holy Cross college for the coming year This will be Lehy s seventh year as head of the local institution unlike the usual three year term
In a police court session Judge Pickman placed several offenders on probation or jail. Charles H. Armstrong the pugilist who faced non support was ordered to two months probation after pledging better aid to his wife. Others like Ulysses S. Lund and Harry B. McRea received probation or short jail terms amid multiple drunkenness cases. The session also covered street repairs after a railroad disruption and a letter granting militia target practice at a private range with safety conditions.
City hall expects Major Thomas C. Allen to secure evidence for numerous butter and milk prosecutions. An appropriation for expert testimony may be sought as the department budget is too small for courtroom work. The treasurer may halt payments to Robert V. Saunders, city farm superintendent, pending a legal ruling. Saunders would pay his own costs if the case proceeds, while overseers of the poor watch. The mayor notes the debt distance stands at 260000, with 189210 paid this year and 104200 borrowed since January 1. He disputes a street railway quote as misattributed.

The Big Seven camps organized a Belle Grove trolley party with about 75 travelers from Lawrence. A crowd of around 200 couples attended by 8 PM as Wood’s Orchestra provided music. Officers included General manager Charles McGrail and floor director John J. Cox.
The Building Trades Council held its last meeting at 32 Middle Street and has merged with the Trades and Labor Council. The groups unite as their business and purpose align, and Sunday afternoons are more convenient for meetings.
Cornelius Desmond of the Knickerbocker Athletic Club denies that Flaherty and Gardner received a purse for their Thursday night bout. The fighters corroborate, stating they fought as club members and received no money from the organization. Desmond says betting payments outside the club are not controlled by the club and cites law.
