On the transport Ohio sailing from San Francisco Private Ben Givens of Company H Fourth Infantry was manacled and guarded for return to Manila to face trial for desertion in face of the enemy. Givens says he did not realize the enormity of his offense for a week, having been drinking heavily before leaving his post for the Indiana.
Girls' clubs in southern Kansas vow not to marry any man who did not serve with the Twentieth Kansas regiment. They pledge lifelong bachelorhood rather than wed men who stayed home, and plan a big reception for the returning soldiers.
Natives of Kusale in the Carolines petition the President to annex the island to the United States. The king high chiefs and prominent island leaders sent the petition as Germany has bought the group from Spain and will take possession. A war on Kusale may follow similar to the Philippines, and the petition arrived too late.
Adolph L. Luetgert, Chicago sausage maker serving life for the murder of his wife, was found dead in his Joliet cell this morning. The cause is unknown. an inquest is planned. Allegations said he cooked the body in a sausage vat.
The body of Col. Ingersoll arrived in New York on a special train this morning. A plain black coffin, covered with roses, accompanied by the family, was carried to the city. Incineration is planned for noon.

The fire bell rang Thursday the 20th about 2 am for a fire at Edward McGrath's barn West Bedford just over the Concord line. It was incendiary in origin the third such incident recently. Neighbors across the street discovered the blaze. No cattle or horses were harmed but several tons of hay and oats were destroyed. Mr B F Mills is very ill with malaria causing great concern among friends. Only about six men remain employed at the rim works with most machinery moved to Bradford Pa awaiting a restart.
Miss Mary Marshall daughter of Eben and Mary Frost Marshall died at her Londonderry home on July 19 at age 73 after a brief illness of heart failure. A lifelong East Tewksbury resident active in church work since 1864, she devoted herself to friends and relatives. funeral services were held at her home and the Congregational church with Rev. S F French officiating. Bearers were Z P Foster Enoch Foster J I Carter and Milton Clark. Relatives include sister Mrs Deacon Gee Pillsbury. Interment was in the family lot at the Centre. Floral tributes included a sheaf of wheat with a crossed sickle inscribed At Rest from B F Whorf and wreaths from H W Pillsbury and A C Blaisdell family.

Officers appointed from the militia to the 26th United States Infantry face resignation of their militia commissions because they serve two years in U S service away from state control. Captain John A Bordman Jr has already resigned from the 1st Heavy Artillery. A fellow officer has requested a two year leave which will not be granted.
At the Wednesday drill Company C focused on guard mount in readiness for the annual first brigade M V M camp at South Framingham from August 19 to 27. Raw recruits were instructed on sentinel orders and eight days of camp life were arranged. Brigadier General Mathews orders were read, Capt. Livingston added guidance, and thanks were given to the decoration committee and Lieut. Rose for contributions to the company’s literary department.
A social gathering hosted by Miss Bertha M. Davis on Randolph Street last evening brought about twenty five intimate friends. Miss Catherine Rodger assisted in receiving. Music featured piano solos by Miss Alice Davis and songs by Albert Hoyle and Gideon Spencer. Refreshments were served by Mrs Geo W Ingalls with help from Miss Bertha Jennings and Miss Mabel Carter. Games followed before the merry party adjourned at a late hour.
The Salvation Army held an indoor meeting last night at Wick street vestry with Ensign Tranton and wife from Lawrence as speakers. Local captain Miss McHugh spoke and band members gave testimonials. attendance was small.

Stephen F E Leonard dies at 3 o clock Tuesday morning at his Bridgeport home of typhoid pneumonia leaving a widow Julia O Brien daughter of Patrick O Brien a son Clarence eight, three brothers Capt Leonard of the Ninth Massachusetts volunteers Frank Leonard grocer in Springfield Rev M J Leonard of Lowell and two sisters Mrs N J Murphy and Miss Catherine Leonard both of Springfield the latter in the assessors office.

Geo L Hubbard and wife depart for a month around Rangeley Lakes. A B Kennedy returns from California. Annie May Wylie travels to Fort Covington New York and Dundee Quebec for six weeks. Frank Mansur and daughter Mabelle vacation at Newburyport and Salisbury Beach. Joseph F Kearns of the Merrimack Print Works tours Maine beaches. Charles W Tobin and Jennie Coyne wed in Manchester New Hampshire with many Lowell attendees. Edyth C Walker to spend summer in Gloucester. Edgar Hunt and John F Kenney enlist in the 26th Regiment at Lawrence. Dennis Sullivan visits beaches from Everett market. John H Goodfellow receives letters patent for a recent invention. Stella Moffett of Lawrence visits Lowell. Glenna Ardelle Huson returns from six weeks at Wolfboro and Lake Winnipesaukee shore. Helen Carolyn Webster visiting Glenna Huson.
