Henry W Cramp vice president of Cramp Shipbuilding rejects Washington article claiming Maine hull lines were refined to cut displacement to 12000 tons. He asserts current displacement is 1240 tons with a 23 ft 10 inch draft and that the article rests on nonessential naval figures.
Twenty-sixth United States Volunteer Infantry recruits broke a Boston record on Tuesday with 388 men enrolled at Kneeland and Hanover stations, a daily high for the unit. Recruits are certified by Dr. Phillips and vaccinated before sailing to Plattsburg. Officers plan new recruiting offices in Lawrence Fitchburg Manchester Nashua. total expected reaches 1424 as Col. Rice completes 600 already at Plattsburg.
The Port Albert arrives from Honolulu with Mauna Loa erupting and lava flows near Hilo. A bubonic plague case aboard Nippon Maru led to a cremation at sea after a death following departure from China.
A Nome City correspondent writes Louis Lane, son of a prominent miner, that he has 55 pounds of gold in fourteen working days worth about ten thousand dollars. He has four valid claims and has not reached bedrock. The district currently shows 6000 recorded locations.
Newport R I July 26 The Columbia will not race the Defender this Saturday as the steel mast is not ready until next week and the date remains unsettled.
A large three decker Roman Catholic reformatory ship was destroyed by fire at Liverpool this morning. The vessel crowded with ladies escaped in a series of thrilling incidents though no one was injured.
Col. Garlington will serve as inspector of the general department of the Pacific in Washington. Lieutenant Colonel Ernest A. Garlington, relieved from duty in the inspector-general’s office, is ordered to Manila for the new assignment effective July 26.
The transport Sherman sailed today from Manila for San Francisco via Japan carrying California infantry and artillery units along with discharged men from other regiments.
Adams July 26 The total enlistments by Capt R A Whipple for the Twenty sixth volunteer regiment reach 23 with 10 accepted Saturday five Monday and 8 yesterday. Fifteen have already gone to Plattsburg and eight more will depart this evening. The station will close Aug 2 when Capt Whipple reports to Plattsburg. Washington July 26 Col Ward heads the recruiting department.
Captain Alexander Greig reports to Plattsburgh New York on July 24 1899 for duty with Company BE then reassigned to Company I. He notes Massachusetts and New York men as capable, all in fine form, with two lieutenants from New York. He adds captains must return by August 1 with no recruiting, expects to move after. Plattsburgh praised as ideal for regiment organizing.

McCormick, and band music. Rain cancelled baseball and running events. dinner served to all, with attendees including the Brady brothers and local club members. Burial noted at St Patrick's Cemetery.
Representative Hayes returned to Lowell after a Squantum excursion hosted by Jerry McCarthy surveyor of the port. Speaker Bates gained a further boon from the gathering which included President George KE Smith Hon Joshua B Holden and many senators representatives and party workers. Swallow hinted he would back Bates. Guests dined in royal fashion and took a car ride on ex Representative Graham street cars before late return to Boston.

Mortimer’s service followed at 4 PM from 19 Abbott Street with burial in St. Patrick’s. Mary Trainor’s rites were at St. Peter’s Church with Fr. McKenna. burial in St. Patrick’s. Joseph Champagne’s funeral began Tuesday at 7:30 AM from 66 Ludlam Street, Mass at St. Jean Baptiste, burial in St. Joseph’s. Robert J. Clements was buried at Edson cemetery after a 3 PM service from 17 Daly Street. Minnie Palmer’s funeral at St. Joseph’s included Mass at 9 AM, with large floral tributes and a semi nary student organist.
