In Alma Kansas on July 10 a mob of white men took Dick Williams a black man charged with killing two white men from jail. He was hanged from a telegraph pole and cut down by the marshal. Authorities fear further mob action as crowds remain volatile and Williams is mortally wounded.
Vienna reports the United States government has declined Austria Hungary's proposal to arbitrate damages claims from deaths during the Hazelton riots in September 1897. The U.S. insists it can settle the matter domestically without Austrian mediation.
Chicago July 10 report that a national forestry reservation for governmental use will form this morning totaling seven million acres in northern Minnesota. The plan begins with endorsements from Gov Roosevelt Col Cooper and others and will place lands around the headwaters of the Mississippi under federal control.
Glen Park Club in San Francisco raises bid to 60000 dollars for a Jeffries vs Sharkey bout. They plan admission at one dollar and expect attendance around 100000 in an open air arena on July 10.
Charles A Brigham, street commissioner of Nashua New Hampshire for 20 years, took his own life by hanging this morning at age 86. Cause of death is unknown. The news notes his long service and hints at an unclear motive.

Washington mills in Lawrence will produce only worsted, with other lines moved to Collinsville. Collinsville will focus on beavers and serges, using carding and spinning machines relocated from Lawrence. New machinery will be installed at Collinsville without expanding the mill, and new workers will be hired with preference for former Lawrence employees.

No 1 a 3800 square foot lot bought by Joseph Damault for 2040 cents per foot, No 2 a cottage bought by William B Newton for 1112 dollars, No 3 a two tenement house bought by George H Pheasey for 1475 dollars. This afternoon at 4 o'clock Keyes to sell the Devine property on Church street rents 40 dollars monthly.
Mr Yong Kay missionary of the New England Sunday School association spoke in Chinese to nearly all the citys Chinese residents at the Central Mission on First street. Mr Robert W McAllister led song service and prayer by Samuel Worth. The sermon on the Mount verses were read in Chinese with strong attention and a generous collection was taken to support the missionary work.
The June report notes 698 total attendances and a peak of 40 children in one day. Contributions came from Mrs. R. D. Rolfe, Mrs. J. Return Meigs, Mr. O. B. Ranlett, Mr. J. A. Thompson, the Junior class of State Normal school, Kirk Street Congregational church, King's Daughters of First Baptist church, St Anne's church, and the Christian Endeavor society of Congregational church in Chelmsford.
Andrew Teague a 16 year old boy is laid up at his home in Broadway after an accidental cut during a scuffle with another boy at Moore's mill in North Chelmsford last Friday. A pair of shears struck the floor and bounded against his leg severing an artery. Dr Varney attended him and friends carried him home.
The summer vacation school took an outing to Chelmsford Centre with the committee and three teachers Miss Taylor Miss Walker and Miss Noyes guiding the children. Two special cars were chartered for the trip. It was a great outing and will add another credit mark to the managers of the vacation school.
Contrary to a local paper prediction, Frank Scott did not attempt to interfere with the soda fountain or the merry go round at Lakeview yesterday afternoon while Herr Borjes and his band played a concert unmolested. Thousands of people attended.
Thomas McCarthy, a well known musician, accepts a summer post as flute soloist aboard the Sound steamer Priscilla. Charles H. Walker, Belvidere mill No. 2 superintendent, buys land near Fort Hill park to build a residence at once. Rev Aloysius S. Malone is appointed curate at All Saints' church Roxbury, succeeding Rev Fr McGuigan who was injured by a cannon cracker explosion on the Fourth of July.
Rev S T Ford spoke on work and wages contrasting labor value with public figures and culture. He cited William Whitney and Angell, questioned who embodies true manhood, praised patriotism and heroism, and urged Christian unity and shared civic goods while critiquing liquor laws and proposals for licensing.
Rev Kenngott spoke on the Fourth of July as a church and state occasion in the First Trinitarian Congregational church service. He noted the republics' ties to Christian and early church influence, discussed city spending on fireworks, and praised the parade as a common recreation for all, urging good citizen participation.

A paranormal threat named the kissing bug has reached Lowell and poisoned two residents. Mrs. James Dawson, bitten near her right eye, suffered intense swelling and blotches. Mr. Herbert Cowdell, bitten on the neck at a parade, experienced sharp pain followed by severe swelling. Doctors diagnosed blood poisoning from insect bite. The insect was described as hornet sized and dangerous.
George R Perkins and other defendants face continuances for embezzlement and illegal sale. Keefe pleads guilty to illegal keeping of liquor after driving a team with whiskey in half pint bottles seized by Liquor Inspector Atkinson and Officer Walsh. Fine set at 360. Seven drunks noted. several defendants fined five or six dollars. Welch sisters’ cases continued.
In Rochester New York on June 28 Irvin A Howe son of A J Howe of Chelmsford Massachusetts married Laura Ward daughter of J W and Mary A Slocum of Rochester Marriage details list both families and city of nuptials.
Clara A. Curtis aged 57 died at a friend’s home on Charles Street court. The body laid in state at 153 Appleton Street. Funeral services are scheduled for tomorrow at 7 p m with friends invited.
