Chalifoux, BE. T. Rowell, Cc. H. Cosgrove, Dr. Guy Holbrook.
The silver wedding of Mr and Mrs George H Dole of Gaites street was observed on Wednesday evening with an unexpected visit from Lowell lodge of Odd Ladies and notable attendance by the Grand Army, honoring the veteran couple. A substantial presentation was made to Mrs Dole. Married in July 1878 by Rev Smith Baker D D, they have eight children born, four living: Geo A Dole serving with Co M Ninth regiment at Santiago, and daughters Mrs Guy Archibald of Haverhill and two other daughters at home.
Headquarters Shafter reports Spanish losses in the battle at 1200 killed and 1600 captured. Cervera has been moved to the Iowa for treatment after claiming he was ordered to leave the harbor but naming no commander. Our forces suffer one killed and two wounded with no sign of yellow fever among troops.
A group left Lowell at 1.30 this afternoon joining the Winthrop mortar battery. Named recruits include Timothy Sagrue of 66 Lewis Street Eugene Vincent of 44 Tucker Street Dennis Pendergast of Centralville Michael Keegan of Lawrence Ed Mooney of 25 Hurd Street and William Cronin of 116 Dummer Street. Private Cronin led the squad.

Madrid July 7. Rumors claim the bombardment of Santiago has begun. A Spanish cabinet minister says the current government will devote itself solely to defending the Spanish coast and national security.
President McKinley issues a nationwide proclamation dated July 6 1898 from the Executive Mansion urging Americans to observe thanksgiving for naval and military successes in Manila Bay and Santiago de Cuba. He requests divine prayer for victory, protection of troops, and speedy peace, urging compassion for the wounded and bereaved.
Seventy five men gathered for exams as Lieut Healey and Sergt Kane selected eight from the city for service with the Ninth regiment. The recruits, named Earl Brown Sullivan Richards OMalley McCarthy Wynn Morris, will soon go to join Camp Alger or Santiago after enrollment. Capt Garity's company drilled, with Lieuts Estes and McDermott present. Prices offer bicycle attire at Steele's on Prescott Street.
At a regular meeting in Spinners hall delegates to the Trades and Labor council were elected: Alex Ray Charles Stanley Charles Sweeney Frank George and Robert Graham. A discussion followed on ending apprenticeships in bricklayers and masons trades for five years. The subject will be debated again next Wednesday night.

A crowd of about 1000 in North Billerica presented Lieut Thomas Talbot a regulation pattern sword at his home after a procession from the Talbot mills. Fireworks and cannon salutes accompanied the tribute, followed by a memorial hall spread hosted by the Talbot family and aided by townspeople.
At a meeting of the Lowell Auxiliary of the Massachusetts Volunteer Aid association it was decided to call for contributions through ward chairmen of jellies canned meats saltines and related items for the hospital ship. The supply committee will handle the articles and forward them via the association’s vice president. Future meetings occur at the Ministry-at-Large quarters on Middlesex street with the next meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
Three new residences are under construction at the foot of Fort Hill. P F Sullivan of the street railway is under roof and ready for lathing. E A Smith has built a large house on the same street, while foundation work begins for Dr Holbrook's building. Thomas Costello is erecting a house on Nesmith Street opposite his current home.
Charles Gorman a 10 year old from Everett and Fayette streets fell while picking cherries at 11 30 this morning injuring his arm and causing head bruises. The ambulance took him to St. John's hospital for treatment.
A home wedding in Andover linked Miss Bertha L. Manning and Mr John Lewis Phillips. Rev L W Phillips and Rev C I P Bancroft officiated. Attendants included Arline Manning and Harriet Ricker, with Frank Balch as best man. The reception followed as the Colombian Orchestra played. The couple will reside in Andover.
Mr Fred W Derbyshire and Miss Lizzie M Conant both of Lowell were united in marriage by Rev George F Kenngett at his residence 296 Liberty street on Wednesday morning July 6 at 10 30.
Flora E. Stacy lodge of Good Templars held a lively Bay State hall gathering with temperance talks by Ida A. Tilton Frederick Jones and others. The next public session is planned for Wednesday with committee members named. Two applications were received at Clan Grant in Manchester Unity hall. Several funerals were held yesterday and today from homes on Summer Street Union Street Adams Street and Andrews Street. Services at St Peters and St Patricks churches officiated by Rev Fr Mullen Rev N W Matthews and Rev Fr McHugh with burial in Catholic and St Patrick's cemeteries. Bearers included Monahan McNulty McAloon McOsker Sla vin Murphy and others. The Odd Fellows and Excelsior lodge members attended with choir and organ music led by BE Faulkner.
In Hadley Police Court 14 drunks, mostly first offenders, paid nominal fines of one dollar. Patrick Gorman and John Griffin were fined five dollars each. Jennie Cole was sent to the workhouse for five months. John B Clancey and George E Howe had cases continued. John F O'Brien held on $800 bail for July 14. Zepherin Perusse charged with cruelly beating a horse, case postponed with $200 bail.

The nine mile route runs from Worcester street Framingham along the Worcester turnpike to Southboro then to Marlboro via White's Corner.

Elliott A Hubbard left town yesterday for an extended trip through Vermont. Fred Medina returned from study at Women’s Hospital New York. Rev M J Leonard of St Patrick’s church went to Springfield to visit relatives. Rev Richard S Burke acting pastor of St Patrick’s church left town for a short vacation. The Misses Rose G Stasia McLarney Retta McCarter Sue Nelson of Summer street and Alice McGann of North street are at Old Orchard Beach for two weeks. Louise Breen of South street will join them soon. Samuel and Robert Wamsley formerly of 7 Steadman street Lowell are New England Klondikers enduring hardships for gold. Samuel Wamsley wrote a series of letters to a Lynn friend. Carl Stencil going to California for two years received a gold watch from Apollo club. John D Honey, club president, spoke.
