Wesley church Sunday school gathered at Long Pond for a large picnic featuring a fish chowder prepared in the boat house by Capt. George Maker and several boat races led by Captain Maker, Charles Locke, George Senior, and William Robinson. St Johns church Sunday school hosted about 200 at Mountain Rock with basket lunch, hammocks, and boating for families.
Miss Kittie Taaffe a young domestic on Forrest street fell from an electric car near Chelmsford and Forrest about 10 o clock Sunday night. She signalled for the car to stop at her street corner but it did not, she leaped from the moving car, struck her head, and was rendered unconscious. The car stopped and she was taken to her home. Her condition was much improved this morning.
Officer Jocko Walsh spotted a Greek attacker from last night near Market and Central. The suspect attempted to flee but tripped near the corner and was apprehended by Walsh at the police station. The man’s name was unpronounceable.
Frank Rand of Gorham street, a milk wagon driver for E B Simonds, was thrown from his wagon when the whiffletree broke at Whipple and Mead streets. He suffered a badly cut and bruised head and was taken to St Johns hospital by ambulance after 3 a.m.
Tomorrow will be the Fourth of July and no Courier will be published. The Citizen will come out as usual tomorrow morning and on Wednesday the Citizen and Courier will provide a complete account of the celebration and all the news.
A man arrested last week for drunkenness under the name Joseph Boyd is not the Joseph Boyd visiting in Lowell from Togus Maine. Authorities clarify identity and continue investigation to prevent misidentification.
Death notices record Ashworth 60 in Chelmsford with July funeral at home, Yarnold 19 in Lake Mascuppie on June 29, Perry infant daughter two months in Chelmsford, Curley child one year eight months at Fulton Street home, Egan child Mary four, all dated July 2 or June 29 with family addresses listed.
A Greek mob attacked Officer Jocko Walsh near Market and Jefferson, sparking a street battle in which many sustained wounds. Eugene Savage seized the officer’s club, Breault joined, and several Greeks and locals were hurt. about 8 to 9 arrests followed as police restored order.
About four hours after the assault on Officer Walsh, 19 Greek musicians and Greek dancers were arrested in Daly's block on Suffolk street, sending the largest prisoner load yet. In all 28 Greeks were taken, nine jailed for assault, eight caught during the Walsh incident and one, George Nicolopous, later nabbed at the station.
Margaret Maguire about 23 fell twenty feet from a railing after an insult from James Donnelly about 70. She was taken to St Johns with a bruised head and later recovered. Donnelly was arrested and may face assault and battery charges.
Local inspectors and officers conducted checks across streets including Moody between Hanover and Tremont and Cabot and Robeson. Four gallons of whiskey seized from a Moody street store. two youths Adelard Jean and Alfred Sawyer arrested for illegal sale. Additional seizures and arrests occurred on First street, Cabot street, Tyngsboro and Middlesex place, involving Thomas Looram, Louis Orion de Champagne, Philip German, Joseph Larock, George Boudreau, and Thomas Bodkin for illegal liquor keeping or transport.
