The Proprietors of Locks and Canals directors, who are treasurers of the city’s manufacturing firms, voted 1500 for the People's club at a recent meeting. This annual gift, begun last year, funds the club with public contributions to maintain reading and amusement rooms used by mill workers and patrons.
General Curtis Guild Jr will guest Company C on Monday and Tuesday, attending a reception at the armory the night before the Fourth of July. Public invited to meet him from 6:30 to 8:00 at the armory as preparations continue for the sham battle and celebrations.
In Pickman’s police court six intoxicated individuals were disposed of. William Kennefick waived examination on arson charges and was held for the grand jury in $500. Larceny and drunkenness charges were continued until Oct. 20. Nellie Lynch fined $10 for assault on C H Sullivan. Jeremiah Frazier liquor keeping continued to the 7th. Fred C Batchelder defaulted on innholder claim. Cosmas Katsikas illegal keeping found not guilty.
Firemen tackled a lively morning blaze at 9 57 in Ayer City destroying a barn and shed behind George L Estabrook s house on old Marshall road while the house was saved. Estabrook an overseer in the U S Cartridge shop owned the property. Rose Johnson was arrested on Church street for larceny of a suit from Walter S Hall of 20 Concord Street by inspectors Allen and Laflamme.
In police court Judge Pickman presided as William H. F. Kelley pleaded not guilty to murdering his wife. A crowded gallery filled the room. Kelley appeared nervous, smiled oddly, and requested a postponement to next Friday. The case stems from an earlier March 26 knife wound incident amid disputed marriage claims and a child. He is held on bond pending further proceedings.
Medical Examiner Irish and Dr. Meigs conducted an autopsy on a well nourished 35 year old woman. External wound above left eye resembled a penetrating pistol shot with burnt edges. Bullet trajectory ran through back of neck to foramen magnum. bullet located near medulla oblongata. cerebellum slightly lacerated. extensive brain hemorrhage noted.
William Kelley, in a two hour crossfire with three newspaper men, persisted in his innocence after arrest for the murder of his wife. He detailed his movements from the Wednesday morning meeting to the Lawrence trip, claimed a troubled marriage, and noted prior knife injury in a separate incident. Kelley described earnings as a showman, and mentioned a past marriage to Rhodes’ former wife in England, with related domestic history.
Officer Creahan at the station identified Kelley as the man seen with the murdered woman. Gannon and Berry named him as the shooter. Kelley had prior arrests including an assault on Theresa Rowe on May 26, 1888 and repeated drunkenness fines in 1889 leading to a brief jail stay.
A Citizen reporter learned from several locals that Theresa Rowe, known in England, came to Lowell about 14 years ago with her child, left her husband overseas, and caused estrangement by her conduct. The Courier later revealed her as Mrs Kelley, a woman said to have been murdered.
A Lowell electric car encounter led to Kelley and Lacey’s arrest on Lowell Street near Broadway. Inspectors Allen and Laflamme secured the suspect as Policeman Martin and the officers approached, with Kelley offering no resistance. Joseph Gould longtime Westford resident died at his home Friday June 30 at age 80 years 4 months and 13 days. He leaves a widow and two sons Warren Gould of Middlesex Village and Allen Gould a clerk at the Twentieth Century shoe store. Patrick Lawless aged 60 died last night at 82 North street. He is survived by one sister Mrs. Patrick Ryan.
Funeral services were held for James J. Devine at his home on Kinsman Street with burial in the Catholic cemetery. Bearers included Fred McCarthy and James Reynolds. Separate services followed for Lou Caza from a quarry accident in Graniteville at St. Jean Baptiste church with burial in East Chelmsford cemetery. Philip Murphy, killed at a gas works incident, was honored at St. Patrick's Church with music and bearing by Patrick Ward and others. 250 gas works workers attended. Jeremiah Sullivan, another Graniteville quarry victim, was commemorated at St. Catherine's Church with a large turnout and burial in Graniteville cemetery.
James L. Jewett after 18 years in Boott mills spinning department leaves Lowell for a more responsible role in Charleston DC accompanied by his daughter Lizzie E. Several Lowell residents depart for trips to Michigan New York Bath Portland Southport ME and Ireland with return plans in July and August.
