A poem by Thomas S. Denison from the July Century depicts a silent dead brigade marching toward springing pines. Ghostly ranks, captains at the head, move through a former battlefield to a banner of peace. The verse invokes divine peace and heavenly exultation.

At Saratoga on July 2 Cornell won the freshman race with Columbia second and Pennsylvania third in 10.51 2 5. In the varsity race Pennsylvania took first place, Cornell second, Wisconsin third, and Columbia fourth, highlighting a strong showing for Cornell and Penn.
A Madrid despatch reports that at a cabinet meeting in London on July 2 it was officially announced that Camara's torpedo boat destroyers will return to Spain.
Captain Nicho las Stable, aide to Cuba's war secretary, arrives from El-Esherante Puerto Principe to consult Gen Miles. He says a Spanish raid captured two Cuban officers, one bound to a cannon mouth and blown apart.
Lowell figures show O P Ellis acted without authority recruiting for the First U S Engineer team. Mayor Bennett learned that Ellis collected men at the armory for medical exams. a Boston official confirms Ellis had no mandate and intended only to assess potential volunteers.

John Connors of Molloy’s court Summer street suffered severe armpit to elbow burns while cleaning Normal school boilers on Broadway. He used kerosene and cotton waste and a lamp ignited the waste. ambulance sent him to St John’s hospital. A boy named Lawrence White of Nesmith street had a firecracker premature explosion blowing powder in his face. he was treated at St John’s and is doing well.
The Wallace Johnson residence at Westford Depot was completely burned this morning starting around nine. Only the lower part furniture and the barn were saved. The story and a half wooden house was insured for 950 dollars with Middlesex company. No town fire apparatus existed, but citizens with pails used pumps from the village center and drew water from a nearby brook to fight the blaze.
Sadie Emerson a weaver at the United States Bunting company suffered a painful accident yesterday afternoon. While placing down loom weights her arm was caught between a weight and the roller. Her arm was badly bruised and she will be unable to work for some time.
A Friday night blast near William Street rattled windows as a youth named John Wader admitted making a large homemade pipe cracker. He faced Judge Hadley for setting fire to a cracker within city limits and was fined five dollars. Several drinkers were fined or jailed for disturbances, with Michael O Connors probation for neglect of a child.
A 60 foot long 25 ton girder from Record Ironworks Pennsylvania arrived Monday for the northern canal bridge from Aiken to Ford street. It was set on Cheever street last night and swung over the canal once in position. A 16 ton steam road roller and two Connors Brothers freight trucks aided the move, a difficult task.
Mrs C W Getchell of 142 Main Street Charlestown swallowed paris green Friday afternoon during a personal crisis after following her husband to the city where he planned a Fourth of July stand on the South common. A doctor treated her at St Johns hospital and she is expected to recover.
The Boston and Maine railroad cancels four Sunday trains on the White Mountains division. The Con cord to Woodsville 5 a m train, Plymouth to North Woodstock 8 50 a m train, Woodsville southbound 12 45 p m train, and North Woodstock 1 20 p m train are all canceled. The notice specifies the exact departures affected.
New York Herald reports Shafter's morning assault on Santiago from three directions. Lawton Wheeler and Kent push Caney Aguadores with Garcia's Cuban troops aiding. U S and Cuban forces form a continuous front as Sampson's fleet shells Caney and Aguadores. Garcia's men advance, nearly reaching Caney, while Spanish defenses strengthen around the city. The Rough Riders face critique for overzealous charging as plans tighten.
In a southeast skirmish of Santiago yesterday American troops captured the Spanish colors. General Shafter reports success in surrounding the city and cutting off its water supply after days of effort to locate an alternate source.

Mrs. Mary Danforth of Cleveland Ohio died at 98. Burial planned in Amherst New Hampshire. Sister of Mrs. Caroline Crosby of Chelmsford aged about 89. Charles Boyle died after a protracted illness at his Seventh Street home. He was brother of Thomas Boyle owner of the Quincy.
