The new war revenue law takes effect today requiring war stamps on prescribed papers and articles. Banks such as Appleton Merchants and Traders begin selling stamps as a rush starts this morning, signaling the government’s effort to fill Lowell orders.
Government agents in the morning rush required stamps for many items in Lowell. Banks failed to receive full orders, settling shortages by sending messengers to Boston. Some drugs go unstamped, while others bear a battleship image, possibly representing the Maine. Denominations ranged up to 60 cents with a 2 dollar tax noted on a stock transfer.

By the time firemen arrived the structure was a ruin, though much stock was saved. A firm member was overcome by heat and smoke but not seriously hurt. H C Church and Son insure the building.

Miss Alice Simonds celebrated her 20th birthday with family in Bridge Street songs recitations and supper. A. W. David returned to duties at A. S. Cartridge works after rest at his Cambridge home. Overwork prompted the rest but he is now restored and active in Royal Arcanum.
The Lowell Military band will perform July 4 at 9 a.m. at City Hall. Program includes marches and American tunes such as American Republic, Gems of Stephen Foster, Der Tambour der Garde, and The Stars and Stripes. Conducted by James A. Murphy with Sousa involvement.

The Lowell war relief fete at the Gen Benjamin Butler estate in Andover street drew about three thousand attendees. Generous Ames family offered grounds with flags, cadets, and a fairy tale Greek stage, turning the garden into a luminous, music filled display. Performers included Miss Bella Faulkner and Miss Sarah Ames with stage direction by Charles D. Palmer, delivering a successful woodland Greek play amid lights, roses, and celebrations of service.

An 800 strong audience enjoyed the operetta Bobby Shaftoe Up to Date staged under the trees above the tennis court. Mrs. Julian Talbot wrote it and it featured lively chorus work, strong solos, and a spirited cast led by Herbert Webster Clinton R. Carpenter T. F. O Donnell and Grace Hanson with many young performers earning praise for their energy and stage presence.
