In Washington on January 25 the battleship Maine arrived in Havana harbor after orders delivered by torpedo boat Dupont. Dupont left Key West last night and hailed the Maine at Dry Tortugas before the Maine moved in. No direct news from Havana had been received yet.
Rev. Charles O. Brown, once pastor of a Congregational church, confessed to sensational charges after two years of denial. He appeared before the San Francisco Bay Conference and was unanimously expelled from the group.
Toronto city council passed a resolution barring aliens, especially United States nationals, from employment on civic works in construction. The action was approved last night in Toronto, Ontario.
Herbert N. Curtis, a wealthy Waterbury native, was arrested in New York on an order from Justice Hirschberg in Poughkeepsie. He posted $2500 cash bail after a suit by Joseph J. Morehouse of Poughkeepsie claiming Curtis alienated his wife's affections and seeking $50,000 damages.
Judge Bond finds Gazette Publishing and Telegram Newspaper liable for keeping court contempt matters in their pages. Each fined 100 dollars with 21 hour danger of execution on corporate property. Also reports the death of John Ralphs, a 35 year old butler for Commodore George H Perkins, who shot himself and died at City Hospital.

Julia Huse a familiar figure on Worcester streets died from blood poisoning at city hospital after long illness from varicose veins. Known as Blues she wore a man’s hat and coat and dragged a small wagon selling blueing. Her origins trace to Lowell with American parents and little known relatives.
