Nelson H. Morgan slipped on ice Saturday morning and broke his arm. A Granite Street woman misplaced $34 from a wallet found with laundry. The owner and family have left for Canada. Mrs Laura M. Otis of Nashua died Saturday at Otis Street home. She would have turned 76 next February 1. Mr Otis died January 4, 1894. they celebrated their golden wedding eight years ago.
The cotton strike enters its second week with merchants fearing long disruption. Local businessmen worry their stores may close or operate at a loss if the standoff continues, while workers and mill owners seem determined to resist negotiations.
Fall River reports no change in the strike. the King Philip mills remain shut. A special meeting of the weavers is scheduled for tonight to discuss actions and potential outcomes.

Joseph Miller of Lewiston Pennsylvania died after a gun discharged in New York while he and friend W H Watson Jr of Rochester New Hampshire were at the Trades School. The blast occurred while Watson attempted to clean a newly bought revolver. Watson was arrested as police investigated the accidental shooting.
The Lowell Co operative Association held its annual meeting at Odd Fellows Temple. A semi annual dividend of 10 percent was declared on groceries and coal bought in the last six months and 7 percent on merchandise. Arthur H. Cluer reported stock gains, sales rise of over $21,500, and overall gains over 1895. Auditors showed a profit of $9609.67. The group purchased the old Olympic Bowling Alley building on Middlesex Street. Directors re elected include Arthur H. Cluer and Edwin Cornock.George E. Metcalf auditor. Thorsten Renstjerna. No clerk elected.
The cemetery trustees met in City HallSaturday afternoon for two hours. It was reported the session would lead to the removal of the Holson cemetery superintendent and a petition was in circulation for the action.
The meeting focused on a new $10 charge for placing a body in the receiving tomb. Undertakers led by J. A. Weinbeck protested the fee, prompting discussion. The board set interment tariffs at $5 for adults and $3 for under 12, payable at placement with no extra charge if buried in city grounds. Current fees were $2 and $3.
The Zion social and athletic club held its annual outing at Mrs Butterfield's home in Tyngsborough. The group rode on wheels due to a lack of sleighs, enjoyed games and a fine supper served by the young ladies, then concluded with a short evening concert featuring readings by Readings Robert Barlow William Smith Fred Potter Orpah Sutcliffe and solos by Albert Fielding and Joseph Mason. Ernest Chippendall Harry Maden and Herbert Hadley led the organizing committee.
Edmund Dubois an 11 year old son of Henry and Amelia Dubois of 18 Hanover Street drowned Saturday afternoon in the Merrimack River near the Locks and Canals gates after venturing too near the edge of the ice. A companion was rescued by a board while workers dragged the river and recovered the body in ten minutes. The funeral was held from St. Jean Baptiste church with burial at St. Joseph's cemetery, Last Chelmsford, under Undertaker Albert.
Charles Davis and William Scully were arrested for disturbing the peace after a fight on Lakeview Avenue at 8 50 p m Saturday. John J Morrison was arrested by Officer McCann for assaulting him during a arrest attempt. A raid on Lakeview Avenue at 1 o'clock Sunday morning resulted in the booking of Maria Stewart Mary J Carey Mary Cross Walter Kennedy Edward Moran Edward McLaughlin and Alphus Hamblett for drunkenness.
In Hadley J Morrison faced resisting officer McCann and was fined 25 dollars plus one dollar for drunkenness, with an appeal and bond set at 500 dollars. James Kelley, deaf, was fined 3 dollars for drunkenness. Five people from a Lakeview avenue house were fined 10 dollars each. Five more fines of 5 dollars for drunkenness. Peter Veaudrey received a neglect of wife probation. Four individuals were jailed for drunkenness.
The Foresters hall committee has elected officers including Chairman Edward J McGann Vice Chairman Michael McMullen Treasurer James R Sullivan Assistant Secretary Martin J Crowe and Janitor P R Monahan A committee of Thomas Moore James J Dunn and Miss Annie Campbell is appointed to revise the hall by laws and rules for the year
Rev. R A Greene preached at Grace Universalist church on Why Do I Believe in God with text from Psalms and 2 4. The sermon urged belief as a core need in a hard world and argued faith is supported by moral insight and historical witness. Worshipers faced street condiciones. baptism followed the sermon.
Rev S T Ford at First Baptist preached on The Unpardonable Sin from Matthew 12 31 32. He outlined two points the sin against the Holy Ghost is real and unpardonable and indicated his view differed somewhat from the common interpretation without aiming to debate publicly.
After mass Rev William D Joyce announced a popular memorial for Fr McGrath, founder and pastor of the Immaculate Conception. A future Sunday offering will fund a group statue, a pietà, to honor his work and keep his name before future generations.
A legislative hearing examined the Locks and Canals petition to close the free landing on the Pawtucket canal at Western Avenue Lowell. The company argues no navigation exists and closing would boost land value while water power remains essential for mills. Mrs Nancy H Swan aged 89 died Friday at her home 131 East Haverhill Street Lawrence. Born in Rumford Maine she moved to Lowell and married Isaac Swan in 1835 then lived in Methuen. She leaves four children Mrs John A Baker Lowell Mrs Fanny S Lee Mrs Henry Small in Denver and George Swan. Also noted Miss Alice Sydney 23 died yesterday at state almshouse in Tewksbury where she worked as a nurse. The deceased’s home was Sussex New Brunswick and the body will be sent for burial today.
Funeral services for James A. Mitchell were held in the parlors of J. A. Weinbeck Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Elder M. G. Nelson of the Grand Street Advent church officiating. Bearers were A. W. Brackett, Stephen Patterson, Daniel Dix and Dr. Carver. Interment followed in Edson cemetery with a Garfield colony Pilgrim Fathers delegation in attendance.
The Old Lowell National Bank directors met this morning and re elected Edward M. Tucker as president. T. P. Hall was named chairman of the Massachusetts committee on guideboards of the L A W. A London Chronicle extract recalls a Paris dinner hosted by Mrs Ayer with noted guests including the Duc d Orleans and Mr Bayard.
