A steam fire engine rushing to a fire in Cleveland plunged through an open draw and fell thirty feet into the river. Four firemen rode the engine. two saved themselves, while two others and the engine sank. The horses drowned. rescuers saved the unconscious firemen who will live.
In dense fog the Ameri can liner St Paul hit the anchor bar near Hotel Brighton, Coney Island. The bow nose pushed 25 feet into the sand before engines stopped. Captain Jamieson refused landing aid. passengers remain aboard. The ship carries $1.3 million in specie and may not be floated for a week.

New York reports the Raymond and Whitcomb five car excursion train bound for California and Mexico wrecked near Crooked Run Virginia last night. No passengers were injured but the head porter was instantly killed. The five palace cars were swept by the storm that caused the accident.

City Solicitor Qua issues an opinion in answer to Supt. of Buildings Varnum’s question on who has charge of City Hall. The opinion states that Varnum, not City Messenger Cahill, is responsible for city hall operations.

James A Hamilton held in 800 dollars until January 31 for forging a mortgage.

Mrs Ann Carr widow of John Carr dies January 24 in Pelham NH aged 71, leaving five children including Mrs Jackson of Lowell and Mrs Fox of Pelham.
A Y M A and Gymnasium committee met to consider instructor Paul C. Kable’s resignation. The committee could not act and referred the matter to the directors after a conference on causes. Kable faced criticism over social invites on class nights and dance duties, leading to his resignation and current plans uncertain.
In Boston on Thursday the street railway committee heard General Manager Sullivan state the maximum daily ridership between Lowell and Lakeview reached 12 000. He noted through riding Lowell to Nashua averaged 200 000 annually over the past six months.
