A heavy wind and rain storm passed over southeastern West Virginia recently, flooding rivers and washing away bridges and timber. Reported deaths were unconfirmed. In Richwood water rose three feet in the waiting room of the pemenes station. The Baltimore and Ohio line suffered about 15 thousand dollars in losses. The Py rose suddenly, forcing waist deep wading to reach higher land. Over twelve miles of the Holly River and Addison railroad were washed away between Berry Junction and Winter Springs.

Victoria B C January 24 The steamship Valencia bound for Victoria from San Francisco struck rocks east of Cape Beale on Vancouver Island in thick weather. With 94 passengers and 60 crew, at least 50 drowned after boats with women and children broke against the ship. Survivors report extreme seas, 40 mph winds, and rapid flooding as engineers and firemen fought to save the vessel. rescue boats were destroyed as the ship sank, with continued danger and ongoing efforts to reach shore. Zonos Varopoulos of Lewis Street Lowell was struck by Boston bound express No 33 at 9 35 am on the Gorham Street railroad bridge and killed instantly. He and two companions stepped onto the inbound tracks to let the critic pass and Varopoulos was hit, dying from a fractured skull. The train paused, an ambulance and undertaker were called, and the body was taken to O Connell and Co. undertakers.
