In Amesbury on January 24, attorney A W Reddy traveled to Salem to seek a temporary injunction against local union No 27 of the International Carriage and Wagon Workers union. Police prepared for added protection as non union workers filled jobs under escort. In court, Orille Vanier was fined 20 dollars for boisterous conduct and Edward Connelly for assault. Connelly posted bonds and was released.
A string of chimney fires in Berry's court and nearby streets prompted quick responses from Branch Street, Pawtucketville, Merrimack Street, and Central fire stations. No major damage occurred. fires were extinguished with minor scorch marks reported on woodwork. Property owners include D. J. Murphy, Jos Coburn, and J. F. O'Donnell. incidents occurred Friday night and Saturday morning.
Reading Pa Jan 24 Officials say coal supply is improving. In the 48 hours ending midnight the Reading company hauled nearly 4000 cars of anthracite from mines. Prospects: about the same quantity marketed until Sunday evening. Usual 24 hour shipments run about 1500 cars. If weather cooperates the company expects to be in excellent shape within the next two weeks.

L Peltier aged 21 of 30 Common Street suffered a severe injury at Kitson Machine Company when his right hand was caught in a turret lathe. One finger was crushed and amputated at the Emergency hospital. another finger was injured but saved.
Brockton reports William Kerrigan a 57 year old peddler living at 23 Orange Street was found dead near the spring well on Grove Street. Authorities believe he froze to death after starting for Whitman yesterday. His wife and two children survive. rheumatism may have left him unable to rise.
The Chelmsford Odd Fellows lodge invites full turnout next Tuesday evening for the third degree. The Central Congregational Church Ladies' Benevolent society hosts a social and entertainment Wednesday the 29th with Misses Henrietta Nichols and Grace Chapin in charge and the Ladies' Lyceum orchestra of Lowell providing music. Troop F local unit plans a Town Hall event February 6 with Griffith's orchestra, managers Hjalmar Karlson and Daniel Haley, a bean supper to follow. Unitarian and Orthodox ladies recently aided a destitute family with food and clothing, illustrating practical Christianity, as Levi Howard leaves stamps for James C. Byam's milk wagon in morning trips. Charles Nichols Jr. assists Uncle Sam at the post office.

Lynn Jan 24 The first break in the strike occurred as some strikers from Walton & Logan factory returned to work in sympathy with the Boot and Shoe Workers union. Knights of Labor cutters plan a monster mass meeting at Odd Fellows hall to counter the union meeting at Lynn theatre. Master Workman Armstrong and Agent Snow will speak, while Haverhill Shoe Workers Protective union backs the KO L cutters. The Boot and Shoe Workers union cutters worked without police escort. a general dinner for imported men is at Lasters hall at 1 o clock. Rioting cases were continued for a week pending the hearing on injunctions, with about fifty witnesses anticipated. The Knights accuse the B S W U of obstinate terms and call for arbitration, urging citizens to join to stamp out the Boot and Shoe Workers' union.
In Haverhill on January 24Thay er Maguire Field factory opened with only 12 of 50 workers reporting. The strike began after the facility closed yesterday with strikers from the Boot and Shoe Workers union opposed by the Shoe Workers Protective union. The group met and voted to stay with the independent union in the dispute against the Boot and Shoe Workers union.
New York dispatch reports a London practice where women caught shoplifting are offered court prosecution or birching by a manageress. Truth notes the birch is severe, with 20 women choosing birching in one shop plus two young foreign girls receiving milder punishment.

Miss Catherine Alexander Duer, granddaughter of John Duer and kin to New Yorks Duer family, died yesterday at her Newport cottage in the 89th year. A prominent figure in the Newport winter colony, she was linked to the famed Catherine Duer of the Revolutionary era and to the Continental Congress and Hamilton era.
