In Memphis on January 23 an Illinois Central New Orleans special derailed after an open side-track switch. Five of seven cars left the rails. the engineer and fireman were fatally injured, three crew members seriously hurt, and about 65 passengers were aboard. Investigators suspect deliberate switch manipulation.

August Wolters a German Brewery worker and boarder at 14 Montreal street narrowly escaped death after inhaling gas from a sleeping room heating arrangement.
