New York police hold prize fighter Joe Walcott after Donna Gordon accuses him of stealing $2100 in diamonds from her at his West Thirty-first street saloon. Gordon says Walcott drugged her with champagne. lawyer George L. Weinberg accompanied them. Walcott posted bail.
Fred Serwiz, aged 15, was fatally burned at the Peabody bleachery when he fell into hot alkali used in the bleaching process. He was rescued briefly but slipped back into the caustic liquid and died.
Capt. Alfred Pratt, 87, of Somerset, was killed when his horse bolted after leaving Slade's ferry bridge. He was thrown from the carriage and suffered a fractured skull. He died en route to the hospital in Fall River on January 24.

A three member committee will arrange a complimentary dinner to honor his ten years of service.
The Ladies of Charity of St Johns hospital plan a reunion at Associate hall on Monday February 18. It will be an invitation event with dancing and each member may bring a friend to boost auxiliary interest and membership. The group met at the hospital Wednesday and did sewing. Those who had tickets to sell for the Orchestral recital should return them this week.
Charlotte McLean died at the city farm this morning after a long period as an inmate since 1886. Mrs J W Carlin, a returned missionary from China, will speak in the vestry of the First Baptist church Friday evening about the situation in China.
Tonight the committee on appropriations met for two and a half hours to review current-year expenditures and planned needs for 1901. Mayor and department heads outlined requirements including salaries, office staffing, and operational costs, with items from the city clerk, inspector of weights and measures, and city engineer. The session adjourned with plans to reconvene next Tuesday at 7 30.
The committee on sewers met informally in the superintendent of street's office with Aldermen Conlon and Badger present. City Engineer Bowers and Supt. Brady discussed last year's work and this year's needs, Brady asking for 520000 for the year including 230000 for sewer work 14000 for maintenance and 8000 to finish Woodward avenue sewer. No action was taken.

Judge Pickman presided at a brief session this morning. Three drunks appeared Varden Lowe and Casey. Var den and Lowe, first offenders, paid fines of two dollars. Casey, a third offender, was sentenced to the works house for six months with six months suspended on the sentence.
